Comment by Brett Payne on July 29, 2009 at 5:51pm: The best known web site for this is Dead Fred. However, there are many other bloggers who feature what are commonly referred to as orphan photos. Julie does this on her excellent blog Who Will Tell Their Story. I also feature some orphan photos on my blog Photo-Sleuth. Actually, I've recently had a wonderful result - this week I received an email from someone in Michigan who is related to the subjects of a photograph that I featured in an article on Photo-Sleuth in March this year.

I'm sure there are plenty of other sites like this. The trick, I believe, is to get the photographs online with as much information as you can find, and then sit and wait. It will take months or years to get a response, and you may never find relatives, but the chances are good.

In April and May I wrote series of articles on Photo-Sleuth about a mystery wedding photograph in the English Midlands. There was no information identifying the subjects at all - only the name and location of the photographer. However, I eventually managed to deduce probable IDs for the subjects, after considerable research. A few weeks ago, I received an email from a family member who is delighted to have the photographs from so long ago! It's very rewarding work.
