Hi, Marianne, Dallas GS has also now another journal which pays authors, is that right? Are you able to get enough advertising to pay for this?

I am the Director of Publication Content for The Dallas Genealogical Society in Dallas, TX.  We did a Writers Contest this year, for the first time offering paid awards for the top 3 papers.  We believe we are the only society to offer paid awards.  Entrants did not have to be members of DGS, and could be professionals or hobbyists.  We received almost 20 entries, and the quality was very impressive.

I am just a family historian/genealogist who wants to publish the story (the real one) of my maternal families. I would like to do this as a hard copy family journal.

I'm the Editor of The British Columbia Genealogist, the British Columbia (Canada) Genealogical Society's quarterly journal and an e-newsletter, "The Offspring".
We have a members' contest each year for the 'most improved' genealogist. These entries are published, usually in our March issue.
Last year, for our province's 150th anniversary we published 2 issues with a British Columbia theme. We had only planned on one but had lots of material submitted. We promoted it as much as possible, mind you and we got a government grant which paid the cost. Good experience all round.
This December's issue will have a 'sports' theme - to honour the upcoming 2010 Winter Olympics to be held here.

I am the editor for the newsletter for the San Joaquin Genealogical Society here in Stockton, California. I struggle with each issue for member participation. Newsletter may be on the way out if I don't get some help soon!

I am a high tech ghost-writer with aspirations of writing for genealogy someday. I look forward to your insight.

The Southern California Genealogical Society has developed an innovative way to develop content for its quarterly journal, The Searcher.

SCGS sponsors one of the few writing contests designed specifically for family history writers. Contest participants do not need to be members of SCGS. In its tenth year, the GENEii Family History Writers Contest awards cash prizes to the winner. Submissions are printed in The Searcher and on the SCGS website. Several contest entries were compiled and published in "Celebrating Family History, an anthology published by Genealogical Publishing Company. Details can be found at www.scgsgenealogy.com. Look on the left-hand side of the screen for the "Writing Contest" link.

Hi Eve - I think its a problem all Journal Editors have (getting contributions - not spelling ;-) ). Sometimes I seem to really struggle and at others I am over-run with material!

I edit Bucks Ancestor, the Quarterly magazine of the Bucks Genalogical Society and contribute to various genealogical magazines when asked.
Do other editors find it a problem to get enough diverse contributions from members to fill the space? I have a small group of regulars, aged 19 to 92, who turn in good material, but I am sure others have a story to tell, if only they would put pen to paper ............
