Besides the outlines I've posted here, I'd get the National Geographic book "Organize Your Digital Life".
Perhaps 2010 is the year we bite the bullet, do the inventories suggested in the book, and spend time actually digitizing :)

OK! One of my projects is to get all these documents, notes and photos in some sort of organized order. Where do you start?

Tammy--I am not familiar with Bygones or how it is set up. However, when I add a female, I try to enter her using her maiden name with her birth parents, if I have them. I use FTM and it will automatically put her in with her husband when his name and marriage information is added. Organizing manually, I would put her with her husband but also put a note on her with the parents noting where her main information is. (maybe a copy of the family group sheet would be good to put there). Putting cross references in with the parent's information could be very important in the case of re-marriages.

We always recognize a person's biological birth name. Women's maiden names are critical in genealogy.

(now with daughters getting married it's interesting to see which surname they choose; when ladies take their husband's surname, it sure is hard to locate them -like those old classmates we had)

I have an organization question. I have been using the gen program Bygones. The names are done by Surname, which for a male is not problem, but, with a female surname, how do you file it. Do you file her with her husband's surname or her maiden name? and do you file her with her husband or with her birth family?

Thanks in advance,
Tammy Mellard Wheeler
