I meant to add, you know that I have to locate the white Marsh's in order to locate the enslaved, if they took their name. Thanks

Hi Pearl, George W. Marsh was believed to be a slave per oral history, so I am trying to back track. The story goes that his father was killed per a rumor he was going to run. I did locate who I believe is George and his brother John in the 1860 census, under the name of Mash instead of Marsh, in the household of another African American free family called the Robinson's, in Jefferson County, VA. This is interesting since he was supposely a slave, they were free in 1860.

Shelley:

I do not have direct information for you, but this is the first time I've heard of African American MARSH genealogy in VA/WVA that has a whiff of similarity to my African American research.  My grandfather, Louis Marsh was born 1831 in GA.  His father was born abt. 1805 in VA.  I do not have a name. Here's what I have for the European Marsh settlers in VA:

John Marsh, 1635; Lewis marsh 1643; Francis Marsh; 1643; Alphouse Marsh, 1702; Nicho Marsh, 1705.

Thanks!  Your inquiry has renewed my energy to search for my African American Marsh ancestry in VA.  I've been at the "brick wall" for quite a number of years.

Does anyone have connections to Marsh landowners in Jefferson County, Virginia, now West Virginia area? I have a George W. Marsh born1834,  in Virginia (African-American), believed to be a slave, somewhere around the Jefferson County, Virginia, now West Virginia area. George married a free colored-Mary Goens/Goings/Goins June 1863, just before the state become West Virginia. Any help would  be appreciated. Thanks

My son's partner has the notorious Australian convict Ann Marsh in her tree; the oldest Marsh ancestor we know of is John Marsh b 1730. This is the Marsh family from Buckland Brewer. The other families in her tree from Devon are Andrew, Getton, Morrice, Peckard and Voscombe.

Please let me know if you find any Marshes in Essex/London in the nineteenth century - or in Canterbury in the 1800's.  It is all fascinating stuff!

I am trying to trace my Devon ggrandfather Henry Marsh & wife Elizabeth who lived in South Molton.I would love to take their line further back or see how they are related to the other Marshes living in South Molton & Barnstaple at that time Their two sons , Edward & John Legg , emigrated to South Africa and Mauritius somewhere between the 1851 & 1861 English Censuses, after the death of their father somewhere in that time.. The two sons are not a problem but their Devon parents are.  I have not been able to trace Henry's baptism (born 1815 in Whitchurch) so don't know his parents names or his wife's maiden name (she was born 1816 in Bishop's Tawton)

Congratulations Gus!  Alas, I've been stuck at "the wall" for over a decade.  My MARSH ancestor is Louis MARSH, an African-American slave born 1830/1 in GA and emancipated in LA.  His parents were born in VA c. 1805.  If anyone researching their European ancestry had MARSH family in GA or LA who may have been slaveholders, I would love to exchange information.

I finally broke down my brick wall Isaac Marsh in LeRoy, Genesee, New York. I am now researching in Braintree, Essex, England 1560-1650.
