The wait is over!
I am tired from writing this scoop, so I'll just copy and paste what I tweeted a minute ago:

"#genealogy #news #FB BREAKING: @FamilyLink @GenSeek shows its new face: GenSeek for FaceBook http://bit.ly/GnSkFB

Read (or just skip to the links section) and enjoy.

FamilyLink is probably waiting partially on the final phase of the rollout of New FamilySearch (which I have posts about). The NFS beta started in early '07.

Am I the only one worried the the main FamilyLink team has no genealogists?

I think this is the longest waiting time ever! It almost has become a joke. Does anyone have a clue when they are going to release this?

First impressions and wishes for GenSeek:

GenyWise’s sister GenSeek partners with the Family History Library, expecting its results could be increased “usability and exposure” for the library catalog, says FamilySearch.org, especially for beginners.

Non-genealogists (and genealogists who somehow have never encountered the FHLC) will someday discover the FHLC via Internet engines. FamilyLink via GenSeek intends to help users in the entire process from the selection of relevant records to the evaluation of information. This phenomenal task means FamilyLink will create sorted lists of sources.

Do you want the most recently acquired source? The FHLC has never indicated which sources were added since a prior catalog issue. To see what is new from the 200 LDS microfilming cameras and FHL purchases could be available at a glance in an improved catalog.

Do you want to search what is most popular? Perhaps the masses will point you to the proper source. Many researchers, however, seek what they want and not what they need. For example, one may ask for a map when the best answer is in a gazetteer.
How do you choose the source that is most relevant?

An enterprising endeavor, to be sure. Count me in; I'd like to help.

I think that when GenSeek links to a source repository, it is up to that repository to provide ready-made citations?

It is my impression that FamilyLink wants GenSeek to be the a kind of meta-library index, not unlike a meta-search engine.
I expect the biggest challenge in creating a meta-library to be connecting to and/or scraping from other libraries; dealing with all the different formats used.
I do not hold it impossible that FamilyLink underestimated that task, but my vote is to release what there is already :-)

very exciting. might gen seek be implementing the proper source citation capabilities that Mark Tucker has been talking about?
