Got a response on another message board regarding my HOLMES family -

"This must be the William Holmes who came on the Hercules in 1635 [NEHGR 75:219], settled first at Scituate [PCR 8:182], and removed by 1658 to Marshfield [PCR 8:201].

The maiden name of his wife Elizabeth is not known. Very little is known of her, mainly that she died at Marshfield 17-Feb-1698 at the age of 86 [Marshfield VR 19; MD 5:233]. William's ancestry is not known. Note that Rev. John Holmes. husband of Mary Wood/Atwood, was not a son of William. See the sketch of the family of William Holmes at 3:392-397 in Robert Charles Anderson, "The Great Migration: Immigrants to New England 1634-1635," 7 Volumes (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1999-2011).

Just think, there are 102 family trees out there changing history! Careful what you copy.

I am searching for the maiden name of Elizabeth, wife of William HOLMES, b. c. 1591/2 in England, who settled in Plymouth Co., MA. There are a number of trees on WorldConnect giving Elizabeth's maiden name as MADDEN. Can anyone produce documentation for that? Also William's lineage is given on about 102 trees (some with sources but no documentation), all which state that the gr-gr-grandfather is William HOLMES m. to Catherine HILYARD. However, the only source that I have found so far is the Yorkshire Visitation that states William HOLMES (the gr-gr-grandfather) was married to Ellen HILYARD and who had no son William (gr-grandfather) to my ancestor William who married Elizabeth and settled in MA.

Can anyone provide documentation to this lineage if it really exists, thanks, Jim.

Can you provide more information than just a name? For example do you have dates of birth, marriage, death--who he married, his children, what honors or titles he may have held? It would also be very helpful to know what source or sources you used to find this earliest ancestor? Anything would be helpful.

Would love to find what I believe is Norman Ancestry of Roger Ablard in Lincolnshire by 1500s - my earliest English ancestor.

According to Faris, Plantagenet Ancestry, 2nd Edition, p. 69, Henry VIII's affair with Mary Boleyn lasted from at least Feb. 1523 to May 1526, while she was still married to William Cary. Only during this period did Mary have pregnancies (Katherine was born abut 1524), until her marriage to her second husband, William Stafford. The article went on to state that probably Katherine was the daughter of Henry instead of William. In a footnote of that same source, on p. 70, is the following excerpt: "...evidence that William Carey did not father his putative children; the paternal interest shown by King Henry to Katherine and Henry, as well as the extraordinary favour shown them by Queen Elizabeth."

Unfortunately, this may have been the opinion of many at the time but it can't be definitely proved which was her father. Apparently she was at least tacitly claimed to be the daughter of William and Henry never openly acknowledged her as his daughter. Nonetheless, Katherine was a descendant of English, French, Anglo-Saxon, etc. royalty through her mother (a descendant of Henry III), but so was William Carey. So regardless of whether her father was Henry VIII or William, she's still a royal descendant on both her father and mother's sides. Some genealogy programs have a way to show an alternate parent so you might explore your program to see if it’s capable of doing this.
