Hello to my fellow Williams researchers. My biggest brick wall is my Williams line. I get back to my 2nd-great-grandfather, Wesley Williams, of Bond county, IL in the 1860's but that's as far as I can go. Would love to hear from anyone else doing research on Williams families in south central to southern Illinois.

Hi to all, my Williams line is thru my mom back to Peter Cornelius Williams born ca 1833 Al, died in Stringer, Jasper county, MS. Peter was married to Sarah E. Davis. (Williams & Davis 2 such uncommon names, lol) I can't prove past him, but have a good deal of evidence to suggest that Peter's father was John J. & his mother was Cynthia Lewis. Would love to be able to prove this link, so any help will be greatly appriecated. Good hunting to all

My Williams is as follows:

Mary Emory Williams + Evan Davis (b. Wales ; m. 1754 PA) =
Samuel Emory Davis (b. 1756 SC) + Jane Cook (b.1763? SC ; m. 1783 SC)

These last two are Jefferson Davis' parents. I hope someone has some information about Mary Emory Williams. Probably Emory is a family name, perhaps her mother's maiden name?

WILLIAMS Surname Meaning & Origin:
1) Son or descendant of Guillemin, a pet form of Guillaume, the French form of William. 2) From the Belgic "guild-helm," harnessed with a gilded helmet or "welhelm," the shield or defense of many. 3) Derived from the given name "William," an Old French given name with Germanic elements: wil = desire, will; and helm = helmet, protection.

In Wales, adding an "s" to the end of a surname denotes "son of," pointing to Wales as the origin of many people with the Williams surname. The Williams surname is also popular in countries such as England, Scotland and Germany. Williams is the third most popular surname in the United States and Great Britain.
