Southard and Southworth
These names have been used interchangeably for centuries. For many years, it was thought that Thomas Southard of Holland was related to Edward Southworth of England and Holland.
DNA testing of descendants of these families suggests that they could not have been related, at least in the last thousand years. However, some of the paper trails used to reach this conclusion have recently been brought into question, so it is important to test more men who descend from Constant or Edward Southworth (immigrated to America in 1627/28) and have strong paper trails.
It is also interesting to note that the names Southworth, Southard, Southwood, Southern and probably others appear in both genetic lines, so whatever spelling your family uses, only DNA can distinguish which line is actually yours.

You do not connect with Southard, but with Southworth instead. I would suggest that you try rsearching Constant and Thomas Southworth who came to Plymouth in 1628 to live with their mother, Alice Carpenter Southworth Bradford, and stepfather, William Bradford of the Mayflower. The story of this family is well known and readily available in libraries. Alice had married Edward Southworth. They lived in England and Leiden and planned to travel together on the Mayflower. Edward became ill and died before the ship sailed. When Bradford's wife died in America, he sent for Alice to marry him. Edward Southworth is presumed to descend from a well respected English family with a rich history. You really should read about it and try to trace the children of Constant and his brother Thomas to find your own connection to them. Your DNA matches that family. It does not match Southard.

Hi Doris, I am still around but have been working on another line lately. Glad to be part of this site, altho I am a little confussed. I guess I will get the hang of it as time goes by.

I have no more information on this line than you found on my website. But which website?!? If it was the Worldfamilies one there should be a line leader you can contact. If it was my own genealogy, check the Source citation to see if there is a contact shown. Of course, as always, if no last name is shown, it usually means the research could not find one.

So glad you found me! I'm hoping you can help me with something... my Southards get confusing with William Newton Southern, b 1818 d 1870. I found several trees on Ancestry who have his parents as Martin T. Southard and Elizabeth Southard (as though that were her maiden name). I show her parents as being Henry Southard b 1734 d 1813 and Ruth Gorsline b 1754 d 1845. I believe you have these two on your website, but no last name for Ruth. My Martin T. Southard trail is cold, I haven't even found his parents.
Thanks for starting this group. I haven't EVEN searched the Southerns on my Mom's side- AACK!
