My great grandfather, John Harris, moved to the Johnstown area (East Conemaugh/Franklin, actually) from Altoona around 1900. His father, Robert, moved from Juniata County to Altoona around 1870.

My ggggrandmother, Harriet Giles was supposed to have been born in Johnstown. I did find her and her mother, Susan Giles on the 1860 census in Johnstown. However there weren't any Giles on the 1850 census (the year Harriet was born) in Johnstown or any on the tax rolls for the county around that year. I don't know if Harriet wasn't born in Johnstown or her mother wasn't married and perhaps had her in an unwed mother's home. According to her husband's obit, Harriet's father was William Giles but I haven't been able to find him.

Welcome to the Johnstown PA Group! Please feel free to wander in, start a thread, or just stop by for a chat. I'll be posting links for not only the Johnstown area, but for some of the surrounding counties as well.

I am researching the families of William PEDEN, John ARTHURS and John BOWSER. Many of their descendants lived in Johnstown. John PEDEN and his sons built many of the businesses and homes in Johnstown in the mid-1800's.
