I'm interested in your Tatum line. Is it from Virginia originally?

Can you tell me a bit about your Tatum line please?

Sorry, the first message should have been the second. I'm your first cousine once removed. My father and your grandmother were brother and sister. My grandparents were Frank Buck and Mary Ellen Coffelt. Carole Elaine and Robert (your dad?) are my first cousins.

It's Deb again. If you send me your e-mail address I can scan and forward you information my oldest sister, Doris-Marie, had gathered. I have pictures of Aunt Marjorie and Uncle Bob. Doris-Marie spent some time with your grandmother in Ohio while searching the family roots. The Coffelt side goes way back. My e-mail is Debbuck5@aol.com

It's two weeks since I left the information on my previous note for you - anything of any use?

Dear Melanie

Your great-grandparents were from Bromley in Kent, England, where Albert Tullett married Elizabeth Mary Baker during the July to September quarter of 1907. Your information has filled in a gap in my records regarding this marriage.

In the 1911 census they were resident in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Both Albert and Elizabeth Mary were aged 27, giving a year of birth as 1884. The return shows that Albert stated that he was born in Crawley, West Sussex, and Elizabeth Mary was born in High Halden (Between Ashford and Tenterden), Kent.

The following information is given working backwards through time and is based on the data available to me.

In the 1880’s the Horsham Registration district covered quite a large area, including Crawley. The only birth registration of an Albert Tullett in 1884 was made @ Horsham during the January to March quarter. The parents were Henry Tullett and Louisa (Nee Baytop). Albert must have been born in January (or possibly late December 1883) as he also had a brother Frank whose birth was registered in the October to December quarter of 1884. Births had to be registered within 40 days by law so there was lots of margin for time discrepancies.

Provided we have the right Albert then the following is your ancestry.

The 1891 Census reveals that the family were living at Gratwick South Cottages, Henfield Road, Cowfold. Cowfold is 7 miles south east of Horsham and 10 miles south west of Crawley. The family was obviously itinerant due to Henry’s occupation, a Fish Hawker. According to this return Albert was actually born in Cowfold c1883 and Frank was born in Nuthurst c1885. There are also three more siblings by this time: Thomas aged 4 [born @ Horsham], Arthur aged 2, and Jesse (a boy) aged 6 months, both born at Cowfold. Henry’s age is recorded as 38 years, born at Cowfold, and his wife Louisa as 28 years and born at Shermanbury.

Henry and Louisa were married at West Grinstead, West Sussex, on the 1st December 1881. Henry is recorded as being 26 years old and his parents were James Tullett and Elizabeth (nee Moore). Louisa’s father was John Baytop.

Henry’s Christening took place at St. Peter’s Church, Cowfold on the 9th July 1854. His father James was recorded as a Labourer. The baptism entry surname is given as Tulet.

The 1861 Census reveals that Henry is aged 6 years, the youngest of 5 children, living @ Cowfold with his widowed father James who is aged 46. The five children are Allen (12), James (11), Dinah (6), Alfred (9) & Henry (6). His father James was a gardener and was born @ Slaugham.

Further investigation reveals that there were nine children born to this couple:
George, Christened @ St. Peter’s. Cowfold, 8th July 1838;
Mary, Christened @ St. Peter’s, Cowfold, 13th October 1839;
Keziah (a girl) Christened @ St. Peter’s, Cowfold, 28th September 1845;
Ellen, Birth registered @ Cuckfield Apr-June ¼ 1847;
James, Birth registered @ Cuckfield Jul-Sept ¼ 1848;
Allan [also recorded as Allen] born c1849 @ Cowfold;
Alfred, born c1852 @ Cowfold;
Diana [also recorded as Dinah], Christened @ St. Peter’s, Cowfold, 9th July 1854 [birth registered @ Cuckfield Apr-June ¼ 1854; and
Henry who was also Christened @ St. Peter’s, Cowfold, 9th July 1854.

It is possible that Henry and Diana were twins, but I can’t find Henry’s birth registration to confirm or disprove this.

James Tullett and Elizabeth Moore were married @ Cowfold, 5th November 1837. James’ parents were recorded as William & Phoebe (Nee Stills) Tulett.

James was Christened @ Slaugham (between Horsham and Haywards Heath, West Sussex) on 23rd September 1810.

From here on I’ll only give you the direct blood line:

James Tullett born 1810 to William & Phoebe (Nee Stills)

William Tullett born 1785 @ Slaugham, 3rd child of five born to William & Catherine (Nee Peters)

William Tullett born 1737 @ Slaugham, 7th child of ten born to Peter & Elizabeth (Nee Gratwicke)

Peter Tullett born c1703 @ Slaugham, 2nd child of five born to Peeter & Mary (Nee Locket) Tylett

Peeter Toolett born 1675 @ Nuthurst, youngest child of three born to Peter & Hester (Nee Shaw) Tylett

Peter Tylett born c1635 @ Horsham, youngest child of three born to William & Susan (Nee ?)

William Tullett born c1604 @ Ardingly, 3rd child of eight born to Peter & Alice (Nee Joyce)

Peter Tullett born 1576 @ Worth, 3rd child of seven born to Edward & Mary (Nee Senty) Toulat

Edward Toulatt born c1540 somewhere in France to Ales Toulatt (Nee ?) and her husband.

Ales is buried in Horsham, her headstone reads: “the widow of a Frenchman.”

============================================================================

Your Grandfather, Albert Robert Tullett, was born in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire in1911. The birth was registered in the April to June quarter of that year. Your information has filled in a gap regarding this individual’s father.

Albert Robert and his mother Elizabeth M. Tullett arrived on Ellis Island, New York, on 9th December 1912. I can’t find any record of his father’s arrival.

I will need as much data as you can provide, ideally Full Names, Dates & Places of Birth, Marriage and where appropriate Death.
I don't have much information currently on the US and Canada branches of the family, so anything you have will be a help.
