Hello -

I'd like to clear up some widespread online confusion about William Spivey 1750-1817, who is buried in Putnam County GA.

He was never William "S" Spivey or William "Simeon" Spivey, neither in his will nor his Rev War pay records.

The confusion stems from the way in which he signed his will. I have examined the original in the Putnam County courthouse, and conferred with the ladies there who are experienced in reading the old handwritings.

William made a mark, not a signature, as illustrated by my little sketch -

The "squiggle" is the mark he made, the rest is in another hand.

This is the common way that a mark was used to sign documents at that time, according to the ladies I talked to.

Also, I have found no period or later records that tie the name "Simeon" to this William.

Regards,

Tim Spivey, descendant of Wm.
