Hi Everyone,

I'm looking for my Hall family who lived in Sussex County, New Jersey.  Benjamin Hall was born there 1776. He married Naoma [sometimes called Naomi] Rose sometime around 1799, presumably in Sussex County, NJ.

All of their children were born in Sussex County, New Jersey.

Elijah, Jacob, Hannah, Elizabeth, Malinda, Daniel, Benjamin, Andrew, Ira, Electa and Betsy.

Between 1830 and 1834, Ben packed up the family home and moved to Trumbull County, Ohio.

I'd like to find out for sure who Ben's parents are.

On the flip side of this is my 6th Great-grandmother Rhoda Hall.  She was born 1769 in Sussex County, New Jersey and married Nicholas Mizner in 1788 in Sussex County, NJ.

Most of their children were born in Sussex County, New Jersey. The final children born in Trumbull County, Ohio.

Who are Rhoda's parents?  Rumors are that her parents are Richard and Mary Martin Hall.

Anyone out there related?

Thanks!

Carla

I have the same problem as yours but with Kelly's.  My great-great grandfather, Edward Kelly, was born somewhere in New Jersey.  I just have no idea where in New Jersey.  He was born in 1820, and by 1840 he was in Ross County, Ohio.  In 1850 he was in Fairfield County, Ohio, and then he got land from a land grant after having been in the Mexican-American War and moved to Mercer County, Ohio.   Every census record shows that his father was born in Ireland, and his mother was born in New Jersey, however, I can't find anything that shows what their names were.

You and I have the same problem, and that is that no census records gave children's or spouse's names until 1850.  I keep hoping that my Edward Kelly had siblings who had children, and that now his descendants are searching for him.  I've been looking since 1998.  I've tried everything I know how to do to find anything, but keep coming up empty.

So when I saw your post, I thought maybe these families knew each other and traveled to Ohio together.  Long shot, I know.  Out of all the surnames I am researching, this Kelly line is the only one connecting to New Jersey.  Everyone else is connecting through Virginia, North or South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky before coming to Ohio.

Good luck to you.  I hope you find something to help.

Cindy

I don't know if  you saw this but on Find a Grave there is a memorial for Benjamin.  It states his parents were Richard Hall and Mary Martin.  Author states information was provided by Hall family records.

Hi Nora,

Thanks for the info.

Unfortunately it's *Information is from a Family Book, courtesy of R. Gettler." So far, no one has come up with any records for the Hall family back in New Jersey.  There's lots of reprinting and retelling of the Richard Hall and Mary Martin parentage, but no documentation.

We've gone back to the repositories for Sussex County, Warren County and the State of New Jersey.  There's no evidence so far. New Jersey is fun to research in as it is [though Reclaim the Records has been able to get us access to many that were closed to New Jersey researchers - so I'm hopeful for the future].

I have a similar issue.  My great, great grandfather was Richard Hall born 1790 married to Esther Huntsman.  The lived in Independence in Warren and were married in Sussex.  I've been trying to make a connection to Benjamin and Naomi for the longest time.  I'm think Richard Hall and Mary Martin were also my Richard Hall's parents.  Richard married to Esther was born in 1790 and may be a brother or half brother to Benjamin who married Naomi and moved to Ohio.  If you ever come across anything you think can help me, I would appreciate it.  i will do the same.

Your G-g-grandmother Esther Huntsman Hall was sometimes called Hester in the records.

There are many documents about the Huntsman Family - they were prominent in New Jersey.

For your Richard Hall I have many land ownership documents in my Gallery on my Ancestry Tree:

Yep, your Richard Hall is my 5th Great Uncle.  He is brother to Rhoda Hall Mizner, who married Nicholas Mizner. And brother to my 4th Great-grandfather, Benjamin Hall and wife Naoma Rose Hall.
