Both Patrick Dawson and John Dawson died in St. John, NB. John Dawson's eldest son, Henry, had a Patrick Dawson and Lizzie Finnegan listed as godparents on his baptismal certificate. Though, I have nothing to say it is the same Patrick Dawson, nor what the relationship was. But my family does have a distinct trend of the father's brother and mother's sister as godparents which goes through several generations - even to me. If I could find them all in the 1881 Census, that might answer some questions, but haven't been able to yet.

Did he die in NB?  Do you think Patrick might be his father?

My Dawson ancestors are also from St. John, New Brunswick, Canada. John Dawson (b.1845 d.1925). Different year's census say he immigrated in either 1853 or 1870. My great uncle said they came from County Cork, Ireland, but I have not been able to find a ship's record nor any immigration record to prove the year, nor any Irish records to prove where they were from. The earliest record I have for him is his marriage to Margaret Ellen Finnegan (b.1859 d.1941) in 1881 in St. John, NB. They lived on the same street as a Patrick Dawson (b.1819 d.1891) - I believe there was a relation, but have been unable to prove it.

My first Dawson ancestor in North America was David Dawson, born St. John, New Brunswick, Canada.  His father, according to 1880 MI census was from Ireland - but family seems Protestant all the way down.  He died 14 Nov 1896 in Lowell (Kent County) Michigan.
