My Crews/Cruse family left Ashburton, Devon to settle in Newfoundland, Canada.  One of my brothers did a DNA test which helped confirm this.  In April 2014 I had the great pleasure of visiting Ashburton.  With the help of a resident, I was able to find the Cruse plaque in St. Andrew's Church commemorating 2 brothers in the 1600s.  I can't wait to go back and explore some more!

Hi, I'm Jan Kelley Hosey and am researching my Crews line that ended up in Heard County, GA.  Peter Crews was my ggggrandfather.  His daughter, Louisa Elizabeth Crews (Bedenfield/Benefield) married my gggrandfather, John Hamilton Kelley.  Her 1st marriage was to a Bedenfield/Benefield and had a daughter, Clemetine.  Does anyone have info on them?

Hi Regina, The DNA testing is not so expensive as you think. FTDNA have a sale on at present and until the end of July the Y-DNA test costs just US $119. There is a Crews DNA Project at FTDNA and I run the Cruse/Cruwys/Crews project. We've had a lot of crossover with Crews and Cruse families having matches. People can test with either project and then join the other one when their results come through. I've got most of the large Virginia group in my project and you can see the outline pedigrees here. If there's any chance you could get your uncle to participate I think you would find it very worthwhile as the DNA is providing answers where the paper trail runs out, and is helping us to sort out who belongs where. Let me know if I can be of any help.

Debbie, I understand. I just thought it was an interesting website, so I posted it.

Using Paulette's Charles City County tree, I believe I was finally able to see where my line fits. I am probably a descendant of James Crew who married Ann Crew. (Number 11131 in Paulette's tree.) His son, Elisha would be my 4th great grandfather. (Paulette did not follow any of James' children so there are no further clues down the line.) I have traced my line back in time to Rev. Charles J. Crew, who died in LA. I am fairly certain that Elisha was Charles' father.

Wish I had the $200 plus to have my uncle's and mother's DNA tested!

Regina, A lot of the information about the supposed link with Nantwich in Cheshire is speculation and unproven. Paulette's Charles City County tree is the most accurate. We're hoping that we might eventually find a Crewe from the Cheshire line to take part in the DNA project to see if they do match anyone.

I found this link some time ago. I have not contacted the website owner and make no claim as to accuracy of the research. (In fact, if varies somewhat from the link you have posted here on the group page on the Crew family of Charles City County, VA.) I found it most interesting though and thought I'd share.

I've now added a picture of Plymouth in Devon as the group photo. As part of my one-name study I've researched a Crews line from Plymouth which goes back to John Crews (born 1806 in Buckland Monachorum, Devon) and Rosetta Wilmott who married in 1850 in Devon. There were several generations of Crews men in this family who served in the Royal Navy.

Welcome to our new Crews group. I hope everyone will join in and tell us about the lines they are researching. Does anyone have a good picture that I could use as the group's logo? A nice family photo perhaps or a picture of a place associated with a particular Crews line?

I have CREW (no S) in my family. Wondering if this is the correct place for me? Crews, Winn Parish, LA is said to be named after my relatives that settled there.
