What Germanic surnames are you researching (Please list Surname - area and time frame)
My German family surname is Bonstein The oldest Bonstein Ancestor of mine recorded in my file is Cuntz Bonnstein and his wife Gela. They were married before 1630 and lived in the town of Ropperhousen, in the Principality of Hesse-Kassel (a principality in northern Hesse) in what was know as the Holy Roman Empire.

The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation (German: Heiliges Römisches Reich Deutscher Nation listen ▶ (help·info), Latin Sacrum Romanum Imperium Nationis Germanicae, see names and designations of the empire) was a political conglomeration of lands in Central Europe in the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Emerging from the eastern part of the Frankish realm after its division in the Treaty of Verdun (843), it lasted almost a millennium until its dissolution in 1806. By the 18th century, it still consisted of the larger part of modern Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria, Liechtenstein, Slovenia, Belgium, and Luxembourg, as well as large parts of modern Poland and small parts of the Netherlands. Previously, it had included all of the Netherlands and Switzerland, and parts of modern France and Italy (see: Maps below). In the 18th century, when the Empire was already in decline, Voltaire ridiculed its nomenclature by saying that the Holy Roman Empire was "neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire".
It was never a nation state. Despite the German ethnicity of most of its rulers and subjects, from the very beginning many ethnicities constituted the Holy Roman Empire. Many of its most important noble families and appointed officials came from outside the German-speaking communities. At the height of the empire it contained most of the territory of today's Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Czech Republic and Slovenia, as well as eastern France, northern Italy and western Poland. Its languages thus comprised not only German and its many dialects and derivatives, but many Slavic languages and the languages which became modern French, Dutch and Italian. Furthermore, its division into territories ruled by numerous secular and ecclesiastical princes, prelates, counts, imperial knights, and free cities made it, in the early modern period at least, far less cohesive than the emerging modern states around it.
However, during most of its time it was more than a mere confederation. The concept of the Reich not only included the government of a specific territory, but had strong Christian religious connotations (hence the holy prefix). Until 1508, German Kings were not considered Emperors of the Reich until the Pope had formally crowned them as such.
The Reich can thus best be described as a cross between a state and a religious confederation

My family moves forward to 1776 and the American Revolutionary War. Laurentius (Lorenz) Bonstein (Johann Paulus (Paul)5, Christian4, Henning3, Cuntz2, First name unknown1) was born February 5, 1716 in Grossropperhausen, Cassel, Germany and his wife Hedwig Lingemann have to give up two son to the standing Army of Frederick II, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel.
Paulus Bonnstein and his younger brother my ancestor Johann Jacob (I) Bonstein.
Jacob stayed here and Paulus went home to Hesse-Kassell and family after the war.

I am doing this part for my adoptive fathers family. His Grandparents were both from Germany I hope that someone can make a connection and add info to the tree.
Carl or Karl BANZHAF: Born 6-11-1872 in Wuerthenburg, Germany, Came to America with his brother Lucas in 1888. Setteled first in Nebraska, then Karl took his wife and kids and moved moved to Wyoming.
Olga HERMANN: Pozen, or Hanover Germany. Born May 3, 1878. Came to America in 1796
Not much is known about their parents since the children did not travel to see them only knew they had Grandparents. From Stories I heard from their Daughter, my adoptive Grandmother Olga must of been near the Polish boarder at the time.
We would love to fill in the tree if at all possible. We know that there are relations there in Germany since both Karl and his brother Lucas made several trips back. Also, Olga's sister who traveled with her to US returned stating that she did not like us..

West of the Oder River from Stettin is an area known as the Uckermark (parts of Brandenburg, Mecklinberg and Pomerania) where these families emigrated to USA:

Reasearching paternal and maternal lineages on my mom's side. Kramers and Kinderknechts. Andrew Kramer b. 21 Oct 1864 in Sewalt, Volga, Russia emigrated the US 22 Jan 1907. Andrew married Catherine Schell in Sewalt. The Kramers migrated from Texas to Kansas, finally settling in Colorado. Looking for Andrew's parents and sibs. Have seen some lineages that list Andrew to Johannes to Valentin to Nikolaus, but have not found any hard and fast proof beyond my Great Grandfather Andrew. Kinderknechts (spelling changed to Kinterknecht in the US) begin for me with Peter Kinderknecht b. 1742 Bleiskastell, Saarland, GER. Peter migrated to Louis, RUS then to Marienthal, RUS by 1788. Would like to find more on the Kinderknechts in Germany.

My G/G/G/G/G -Father Wilhelmus Giesen Born 27/12/1772 lived in Lebensorte,details from Mulheim an der Ruhr St .Archiv,that is the only details that i have ,except that Marriage details ,Married Margaretha Kreger on 13/01/1783,have no death details ,the rest of the Family ( children I think) were Joan Giesen B 20/07/1783, Anna Catharina Gertrud Giesen B 18/05/1786,Henricus Giesen B 21/05/1789,all details from Mulheim as der Ruhr St Archiv, any details on them would be nice specially Deaths .

Do you know anything about your Margaretha Kreger's family? Our Gottlieb Benninghoven md Henrietta Kreiger, daughter of a coal district supervisor. Benninghovens lived in the Duesseldorf area hundreds of years. They immigrated with 8 sons to Seward, NE. @ 1875. Our line is second son Otto who married in Riley, KS Flora Winkler... brothers August & Frederick first came to St Louis & then to KS & owned mills on Fancy Creek.
This is where Gottlieb & Henrietta K Benninghoven lived in Germany before

Our Benninghoven families lived in this area for hundreds of years. Benninghofen is another spelling.@ 1860s Gottlieb & Henrietta Krieger Benninghoven immigrated with 8 sons to Seward, NE.Second son, Otto md Flora Winkler of Riley, KS & 4 sons were born. Lorenz the oldest died young.They bought the Z Bar Ranch, now the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve where Curt, Fritz, and Rhein grew up.Otto died in KC on a cattle buying trip with flu. Flora & Curt & Fritz managed to keep a float many years but then sold to a KC conglomerate. -

Nadegda Algenstaedt, born early 1800s in Ukraine, married Hermann Alexander Willing in Berlin in the 1840s.
Her sister, Vera Algenstaedt, married Albert Knobl in Berlin on the same day.
Frederick L. Hunninghaus was born in Elberfeld, Wuppertal, Germany in the 1840s. His mother's maiden name was Helene Preuss, daughter of Gottfried Preuss.
Gustavus Jost was born in the 1830s in Essenheim, and moved at a young age to Oppenheim. He and his two brothers, Justus Wilhelm and George, came to the US in 1854.

Hi,
I have several German lines on my maternal side. My grandfather was a 2nd generation German in Louisiana. These are the surnames...WEIDNEBACH(ER), LAKE (everything says its German), FAUST, KLUG, FORSCHNER. LAKE and FORSCHNER are from Bavaria, everyone esle is supposedly from BADEN. I have a lead that the KLUGS may be from Deidesheim and the WEIDENBACH(ER)S from Steinmauern. The time frame is from 1850 back in Germany.

Husband of Whilamina Siewert) and Ernest Ihrke (born about 1840 in Mecklinberg...died in Fond Du Lac,WI...husband of Sophia Schroeder) All the listings I see for this family list Henry's surname as ERKE/EHRKE and Ernest's as IHRKE. I do not know who there parents are.

Hello,
I am new to this site and I hope to learn from all of you how to make better searches. My family comes from the Starkenburg, Hesse-Darmstadt area. The family name is Schwoebel. The German spelling is Schwobel with a umlaut over the o.
His first name is Peter and his wife was Eva Katherina Bock. They are my great - great grandfather and great - great grandmother. I was wondering if anyone has any information on either Schwoebel or Bock. I have Eva's death certificate with her parents name and her birthday but I cannot find any information on either Ancestry or LDS site. Several months ago I contacted the Affolterbach website,(where my grandfather was born) and asked for help to find any documents to help my search and they didn't bother to answer me. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I don't know where Eva was born, she only listed Germany as birthplace. There was a woman with her exact name but the birthdate doesn't fit nor does the names of the parents on the death certificate.

i'm looking for a Johann POST from Neidenburg, East Prussia which is present-day Nidzica, Poland. Born 1856, died in Minnesota in 1927. No idea who his parents were or anything beyond that. So frustrating!
