One of the first rules of genealogy is that if it sounds the same, it is the same. eg the names Milner, Millner, Millnor, Millnar, Mylner, or Philby, Philbie, Phylby, Filby, Filbey. There were seven variations of Philby in one marriage document that I have seen. Today people get stuck on one spelling and refuse to consider alternatives. One lady was adamant that her family name was spelt .....ly and those spelt ley were no connection. Guess how her grandfather's name was spelt?

If you want to see an example of old English there is a link to a tutorial on the National Archives web page - part of a letter written by Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth I which includes the translation. There was no uniform spelling at all. Even today our language is evolving with differences between English, American English and ANZ English.
