Hello, everyone!  New to the forum . . .

My direct HARRISON line appears to have stayed in Virginia along both shores of the James River from the 1600's thru 1945 when my mother married my father and moved out of VA.

My grandfather Edward Valentine HARRISON 1883-1924 of Prince George County, VA m. Rosa Eva MARKS.

His father William Henry HARRISON (Jr.) - 1844-1924 of "Racefield" in Prince George Co., VA m. Anna Emily EDWARDS.

His father William Henry HARRISON (Sr.) - 1804-1868 of "Racefield" in Prince George Co., VA m. Agnes Wilkins HEATH.

His father Robert HARRISON - 1780-1826 of Prince George Co., VA m. Charlotte Thomas PRETLOW.

His father Robert HARRISON - 1755-1797 of "Huntington" in Prince George Co., VA m. Henrietta Maria HARDYMAN.

That's where we get stuck - not sure who the last Robert's parents were. There are connections to the Charles City Co., VA Harrison's also.  I suspect the the line goes back to Benjamin HARRISON (the first) who is buried on Jamestowne Island.

Anyone else researching these Harrison's or any of the wives' surnames?

Hope this helps.  I grew up on Racefield.  The attached picture of Henrietta's grave is on that property.

Hi, Dianne!

First, thank you for the beautiful picture of Henrietta's grave stone!! I 'visit' her every time I am in the area and have a few photos, but none as excellent as this one!! My mother was born in Prince George County and raised in Hopewell, so that's where we went for family vacations when I was growing up in PA.

The lineage you posted is what I have suspected, but there seems to be no documentation that proves, once and for all, that our Robert is that Benjamin's son. There is actually a court case record that appears to prove otherwise. I've read it once, but I don't see that it 'proves' anything. I need to read it again. (I am working on retiring . . . so that I have more genealogy time! LOL) Where did you get your info? Have you seen any documentation?

I'm envious that you grew up on Racefield. :) I so love all the history in Virginia and my husband is a CW guy, so he loves it too. We are currently tracing my g-grandfather's (WHH Jr.) path through the CW.

Thanks again! If you're looking for any info on your lines, please let me know! I have several books on VA history.

Morning

I just photographed Henrietta's grave.  We are researching a different part of the property............my father (82 years young) says there are slave graves there.  Trying to mark them before something happens to him.

You are researching people, I am researching property : - ) ............this is what I have:

Notes

Robert and Elizabeth (Cureton) Harrison probably lived on the Maud's Neck land of his father in the early days of their marriage, where Robert and Sally Harrison, the two eldest of the five children, were born, their births being recorded in the Cureton Bible. In 1760 Robert Harrison purchased the 600 acre plantation, with house and dependencies, orchards and gardens, on Tar Bay on the south side of the James River, from Benjamin Harrison.

"Recently the record of a suit was discovered, John Syme vs. Robert Harrison, for payment of a debt of some 700 pounds, with Robert's father and elder brother as security, resulting from complex transactions concerning mortgages on the land and slaves of Robert Harrison by John Syme. Robert died in 1770 and the case Harrison vs. Harrison was settled in the Court of Appeals of Virginia on Friday, Oct.18, 1799, after the Revolution, and recorded in Call's Virginia Reports, Vol. 1, p.419, conclusive evidence that Robert Harrison of the Prince George County family was not the son of Benjamin of the Charles City County Harrison family."

Will of Robert Harrison:

In the name of God, amen etc ... to my son Robert Harrison all the money that I lent him to pay for the plantation known as "Huntington" which is about 200 pounds current money.... to daughter Sally Mattox 200 pounds etc..... to daughter Mary Harrison 200 pounds etc. . . "as for my daughter Susanna who took up with that infamous fellow Jesse Binford I intend no benefit of my estate" the residue of the estate being divided between his other four children: Robert, Sally, Mary and Duke. (Note: No wife is named in the will.)

The will is dated Jan.15, 1787, son Robert Harrison and William Wilkins Sr. being named executors. Will proved in the Prince George Co. Court Feb.10, 1789.

On Aug. 25,1791, the negroes of the decd. Robert Harrison were divided among the five children (Acctg. and Division of Negroes, Va. [S944] [S944] [S944]

Stay in touch with me.  I have a lot of the deeds to this property and some photographs.

I am going to Indianapolis ............Benjamin Harrison had a home there.  If you are looking for info..........let me know.  I will try to get it for you.

Thanks for the offer! I can't think of anything in that area offhand, but will try to get into my research notes and double-check. Which Benjamin had a home there? Wish they would have been more creative in naming their kids!! Too many Benjamin's, Nathaniel's and William Henry's . . .
Looks like that info is from the Harrison Repository site, which now belongs to Ancestry via Rootsweb, if I recall correctly. (I am a sporadic genealogist and it's mostly packed away as we renovate our old farmhouse.) Becky Bonner, along with her mother, created that info repository and she and I had quite an email 'go-around' regarding Robert's parentage several years ago!! She believed that he was NOT the son of Benjamin III at Berkeley, based on that court case I mentioned. Unfortunately Becky gave up the site and has dropped all contact with it. What you just sent is more than I have tho'! Thanks again!!

I know of something I think you might find helpful. :) In the mid-1930's, the federal government began the WPA (Works Progress Administration) in response to the Great Depression. An ancestor of mine, Jennie S. Harrison, wife of my great/grand-uncle Hugh, got the job of traveling the countryside in Prince George County and documenting the farms and cemeteries.

In 1996, the DAR indexed these daily reports and printed some copies. I have limited access to one set and can search for any info you might find helpful. Another option, which might be quicker for you, would be to check for a set in a DAR library? Or at the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond or the Library of Virginia - two of my favorite places. It's called the 'Works Progress Administration Reports'.

I will definitely keep in touch! Would love copies of any deeds and photos - paying you for copies, of course!! Another on-going project of mine is mapping where all these farms were.

If there's ANY way you think I might be able to help you with your project, please let me know!!

Just an FYI - in 1866, my great-grandfather WHH Jr. married and my g-gm did not like the name 'Racefield', so he changed it to Rosewood. Pretty sure you likely already know that and not sure if it's even any help to you - just thought you might run across that name in your research. Are you looking for slave cemeteries in particular or other info on the properties? Any properties or just specific areas?

Char

Morning

Just found the Rosewood info yesterday morning!  Yes, looking for slave cemeteries on Racefield.

I have always been told that it was named Racefield because there was a house on the property known as the "gentleman's quarters."  Only single gentlemen lived there (it was still standing and was partially furnished when I was a child on into my 30's).  They were famous for racing horses on the open land.

The house in Indianapolis is the home of Benjamin Harrison, 23rd President of the United States.

The Harrisons moved to Indianapolis in April 1854. Here Benjamin found that establishing a law practice was much more difficult than he had anticipated. In 1855, he formed a law partnership with William Wallace. They enjoyed a steady stream of clients and a regular income.

In 1860, Wallace was elected Clerk of Marion County, and the law partnership dissolved.  Harrison then formed a partnership with William Fishback.  Returning to Indianapolis after his service in the Civil War, Benjamin was filled with plans for renewing family relationships, re-establishing his law practice and returning to his office of Supreme Court reporter.  The firm of Porter, Harrison, & Fishback was formed.  By 1870, Harrison was with the firm Porter, Harrison, & Hines.

In 1874, William Henry Harrison Miller replaced Porter in the firm. Then, Mr. Hines retired and was replaced by John Elam. The firm was then known as Harrison, Miller, and Elam.

Ooops forgot to tell you.  My aunt (age 87) lives on Mount Pleasant former home of Robert Harrison MD.

It is still a working farm and she lives in the original house.  It is AWESOME (the floors and woodwork)

..............I would love to get my hands on it and restore it.

I can only imagine!!  From when I was a kid (many years ago) I've wanted to buy that little piece of ground with ggg-gm Henrietta's gravestone on it.  I was always afraid that it would just disappear under a housing development one day.
