Johanna, I found the birth record for your father!  It was in the Elling Parish, Frederikshavn County.  If you need held deciphering what it says let me know.  It is getting late, I will help you tomorrow.    Finn      Jakobsen%2C%20Johannes%20Hartman%20-%20birth%20-%20data_kirkeboeger...

It looks like you are having a conversation but I see only your comments; don't know why. As in most areas, finding data on recent people can be troublesome because of privacy practices. 1923 is recent. Hopefully a Dane will see your note and may have a work around. Sweden has a death index up to very recent times and it could give you more information.

Do you have street address of any of your relatives in Denmark? Phone books? Probate records?

To generally get up to speed on how to research in Denmark, visit wiki.familysearch.org and follow the link to the Denmark portal.

I really appreciate everyone's comments and help.  Getting names and dates is easy compared to trying to interpret someones words and figure out what they are really saying.  I love figuring out who the ancestors are but I really love understanding what their life was like.  This is only the beginning for Mikkel.  I have many of his published books to sort through and translate yet.

When Google doesn't translate some words how do you figure out what they mean?  Are there other resources?  I have a very old dictionary that was Mikkel's (I presume) but I have not really looked at it yet.

Yvonne, from the information that Paul gave you you could check the census.  Go to ddd,da,dk.  There you will find transcribed census records.

Yvonne, Google Translate (translate.google.com) translates it as: When I was 17-18 years, I would like to have been at the University, but did not. For I would seek Arritsraadet on Subsidies and was told that to get Recital, I had to obtain a certificate from Sogneraadets Chairman. This, who lived in another town, gave me the message that he did not know me. Then I went to the priest, but with the same result.

I don't know what Arritsraadet means, except raadet means "the council."  I assume it must have been a special committee or something like that. Recital probably refers to an oral interview of some type.  Sogneraadets means the parish council.

Thanks for the pointing me to the info on FamilySearch!

Mikkel Vattrup Sorensen was born in Edslev and moved to Adslev when he was 6-8.  He was on Samso for bit.  After being in the US for several years he went back to Denmark, married (in Adslev) and had children, then back to the US.  He had a passion for Folklore.  His idol was Evald Tang Kristensen.  In this passage I believe he is talking about why he did not go to a University.  I would like to better understand what he was trying to obtain and what was required at that time to go to a university.  I think this may have had a big impact on his ultimate decision to leave Denmark and come to the US.  He wrote:
