My great-great grandfather, Christian Schreiber, and his family immigrated to America in 1843.  A relative who did genealogy research told me that she thought they settled somewhere in Pennsylvania when they first arrived.  They later migrated to Wisconsin, north of Milwaukee, and I have found documentation that he purchased land in 1848.  Since there was no census records during the time they might have been in Pennsylvania, I don't have much information to search where they might have settled there.  Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated.

Gene, I would take a close look at church records in Pennsylvania during that period especially if you know the faith. Ancestry.com has many of the records and you can research by the church type. Consider variant spellings. Many German immigrants who came through Philadelphia were recorded in ship manifests and it might be worth looking into other German immigrants they may have traveled with.  There are a number of German newspapers in Pennsylvania worth checking and the Pennsylvania German Society found here http://www.pgs.org/default.asp.  A good listing of other historical societies in Pennsylvania:  http://www.pennsylvaniaresearch.com/directory.html.  There were many large German settlements in eastern Pennsylvania outside Philadelphia.

Thanks Barbara,  Lots of great suggestions.  Gives me lots of ideas and leads of places to check.  New challenge for me!!

Gene, I see a Christian Schreiber (born 1821 in Wurttemburg) and wife Catherine and 2 children living in Philadelphia in 1870. They have 2 children, one born in 1848. Could your Christian have had a son who stayed behind with a pregnant wife perhaps? He is a carpenter as is his son. Located record on Archives. com. Do you know the spouse's name for Christian?

My g-g-grandfather, Christian was born in 1787.  His wife, Friedricke, was born in 1795.  All three children (Sophie, Ferdinand and Louise) show in the passenger list for their arrival in NY on 9/7/1843.
