Actually, Szabo is a quite common Hungarian surname. It means "tailor" in Hungarian, and is as common in Hungarian as "Taylor" is in English. When I was still living in Cleveland (up to the late 70s) there were 12 columns of Szabos in the phone book. Cleveland at the time had the largest Hungarian population outside of Budapest. Even here in the Southwest, I'm asked if I'm related to a so-and-so Szabo quite frequently. Sorting Szabo families out is a challenge! Marianne

Hi, Valerie - sorry, no Mertes in my family tree.  My Szabo line (actually my husband's) all came direct to Cleveland, Ohio.  I actually have never found out where exactly in Hungary they were from.  Marianne
