Sarah, if your ancestor was in the Confederate militery, you can go to the Daughters Of the cONFEDERATCY web page. You can order your ancestors militery service and penion record BOTH for 35 dollors. I got my ggg uncles that way..tons of information. Hope this helps

Thank you -- My great great grandfather was William Milligan that was under Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812. I have all of that. But that family also married the Cherokee indians that I think Andrew Jackson was against. Not the Milligans or Millikans farther on

Google NARA and the website will tell you what to do, you will need a credit or debit card.  It will cost you $25 dollars.  They will mail it to your home.  Good Luck Mary Ellen

Most were confederates. I have a lot of men that were in the rev and civil war and the war of 1812, Would like to research some of them more.

Oh--if your veteran was part of the Confederate forces, you need to check with the State where he joined.

NARA is the National Archives and Records Administration.  It is headquartered in Washington, D.C. and has most of the Federal Civil War Pension files physically there. NARA has many regional offices and may have one near you as well.   Go to www.archives.gov to find out how to request your records and to see their fee schedule.  (Fold3 has many of the file numbers you can refer to.).

That would be my first step to locating the files that Family Griot is looking for.  Also I would check with the State where their veteran joined to see if they have any records.

Hope this helps.

Have you sent to NARA?  Try to get a compiled service record.  They are quite detailed.  Hope this helps.  Mary Ellen

Has anyone been successful in locating additional records mentioned in a CW pension file? One of my CW ancestors' family was paid their bounty according to the Bounty Act of July 1861 and 1866 because he died in service. In the pension file the treasury certificate numbers are mentioned in a short letter from the War Department/Dept of Interior. Is it at all possible to get the investigative reports conducted by the aforementioned departments? I believe that if there were such records generated that it would be a great find and give a glimpse into my ancestors life BEFORE the CW. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. thank you!
