My Great Grandfather was James Purvis Moffat 1870 -1906, lived in Pembroke, Ontario. I believe his father was John Frederick Moffat born Sept 10 1840 in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England and died 1921 Edinburgh, Midliothion, Scotland. James Purvis Moffat's mother was Eliza Bryan born about 1841 in England.

Any information on "my" Moffats would be greatly appreciated!

Question on 1841 Scotland census for Robert Moffat-Lanarkshire, Scotland. Civil Parish Old Monkland, Address Langlone Blair Row.

Family Robert Moffat 40  wife Mrs Moffat(Jane Brown)41 Children William & Robert age 15; Niel 14; Agness 12; Bethia 10; Margaret 8; John 5; Jane 3.

Also listed with  this  family   are:  Thomas Moffat 20; George 15: and  Agness McLanan 70

I had  assumed that George 15 was  the  son of Robert Moffat,  but I  am wondering since  William  and  Robert are also 15.

I am sure  the  GeorgeMoffat (24) &  Angess(24) listed on 1851 census are my GGgrand parents.. BUT  is this  the  same  George listed on 1841 census  living with Robert Moffat????

thanks for  any help

I found David Moffat, with his wife, Elizabeth in the 1841 census. There is a Robert Stevenson living in the same home.

My James Moffat's (1804, Coatbridge) father-in-law is a Robert Stevenson, about the same age as the Robert Stevenson who living with David Moffat.

Does anyone know the connection?

Hi Roger

Just spent a glorious autumnal day walking part of the new Annandale Way which opened yesterday. We walked from the Devil's Beef Tub to Moffat in the footsteps of our ancestors. see my blog at http://scotlandsgenealogy.blogspot.com

Hi Roger
Thought I would join your group. As you may know the Hallidays and Moffats were neighbours in north Annandale,Dumfriesshire. I visit the area regularly and corresponded with the late Major Moffat of that Ilk.

Hi Barbara

Part of what you describe is on the Clan Moffat Society site - the first marriage of David Moffat to Elizabeth Knox, but not the second marriage.

I'd be interested in adding whatever you want to provide to the Clan Moffat Society database. Can you please contact me at Genealogy@ClanMoffat.org

Thanks

Roger

Hello,

I've listed my Moffat connections below, but I'm not sure if they are 100% accurate. I would love to know more about David Moffat and Elizabeth Knox. Also, the name 'Hunter' is apparently a family names but I'm not sure from where - as is 'Easton' which comes from the McKnight side. I'd appreciate any help in that regard. My grandmother was Jane 'Jennie' Easton Hunter McKnight. I have pictures of many of these relatives and would be more than happy to share all of the information & pictures I have with anyone who might be interested.

Barbara

My gggrandmother Elizabeth Moffat, daughter of David Moffat (shoemaker) and Elizabeth Knox, was born in 1839, and died about 1901. Elizabeth was unmarried and the father of Agnes Moffat is unknown. Elizabeth later married John Jamieson on June 3, 1864. John and Elizabeth had the following children: Elizabeth, b: 6-22-1864, Beith; Allan, b: 2-6-1867, Beith; Helen, b: 4-23-1869, Beith; Janet, b: 3-30-1872, Beith; John, b: abt. 1877, Kilbirnie, Ayrshire; David, b: abt. 1880, Kilbirnie, Ayr, Scotland.

(Elizabeth Knox was born 1806, Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland and died about 1853. David and Elizabeth were married on January 28, 1833 in Beith. Their children were: Elizabeth Moffat, John Moffat, b: 1841, Beith, d: Sept. 3, 1919 Symington, Ayrshire; Jeanie Moffat, b: 1846 Beith, Ayrshire; Janet, b: 1848, Ayrshire, Scotland.

David married a second time to Agnes Allan who was born in 1807 in Beith. They were married on Sept. 20, 1859 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland.).

Agnes Moffat was born December 3, 1860 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland and died March 9, 1949 in Dalmuir, Scotland. She was 88 years old and died at the home of her daughter Agnes Donaldson. Agnes married Alexander Easton McKnight on October 18, 1886 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland. Alexander is the son of Alexander McKnight and Jane Easton (birth certificate shows Robert McKnight however death certificate and other documentation shows Alexander E.). He was born April 29, 1860 in St. Quivox, Ayrshire, Scotland and died March 22, 1922 in Dalmuir, Scotland. He was 60 years of age and died at the home of daughter Mary McKnight. In order to find work (Alexander was a cabinet maker), the McKnight family lived in Belfast, Ireland for many years, Alexander worked for Harland & Wolff, shipbuilders, but eventually they returned to Scotland (approx. 1916).

Children of Agnes Moffat and Alexander Easton McKnight:

i. David McKnight, b: 1890, Scotland
ii. Alexander Easton McKnight, b: 1892; d: 1892, Scotland
iii. Jane Easton Hunter McKnight, b: 1893, Scotland
iv. Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ McKnight, Scotland
v. Helen ‘Nellie’ McKnight, b: 1900, Belfast, Ireland
vi. Mary McKnight, b: Feb. 18, 1902, Belfast, Ireland
vii. Agnes McKnight, b: Feb. 1903, Belfast, Ireland

Jane Easton Hunter McKnight was born April 26, 1893 in Beith, Ayrshire, Scotland (At the time of her birth the family was living at 62 Eglington Street, Beith, Scotland). She died on December 2, 1934 of pneumonia, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jennie, as she was called, married Samuel Frazer Woodside on April 5, 1915 in Philadelphia. Samuel was born October 15, 1892 in Antrim, Ballycastle, Ireland and died May 10, 1961 in Philadelphia, PA. Both Jennie and Sam are buried in Mount Moriah Cemetery. They had 4 sons, my father, the youngest, is the only living brother.

(Note: Jennie arrived in the USA on December 29, 1914. She departed Glasgow on the SS Cameronia, arriving Ellis Island, Philadelphia, PA. Apparently Jennie made two trips, arriving originally in 1912, going home for a short while and returning in 1914. Samuel arrived in the USA by way of Canada)

Hi Gina

I have some of your ancestry in the Clan Moffat Society database - your 4x Grandfather is here...

http://genealogy.clanmoffat.org/getperson.php?personID=I15562&tree=ClanMoffat

with the descendancy showing here

http://genealogy.clanmoffat.org/descendtext.php?personID=I15562&tree=ClanMoffat&display=block&generations=10

I'm more than happy to add anything that's missing from this that you can help with - also with William's ancestry. Can you eMail me at Genealogy@ClanMoffat.org and I can send you a descendant chart to look at that does show the names of those living.

Cheers

Roger
