GRAY/GREY in Yorkshire, England
I have traced my GRAY/GREY line back to a family living in the small village of East Cottingwith a few miles to the south-east of York - the county town of Yorkshire towards the north-east of England. They were there in the early 17th Century - occupied as agricultural labourers. From there, their descendants moved to York itself before moving to Leeds (Yorkshire) in the 19th Century. At the turn of the century, I believe that my family went off to the USA for a few years. However, they returned to England - this time living in the town of Bolton in Lancashire. My father moved to the south of England - to the town of Southampton in Hampshire.
My next step is to look at the parish records for the period before 1650 to see if I can trace this family further back in time.

My husband's Gray family line came from Sancton, Yorkshire. George Gray was born in 1830 in Sancton the second son of William Gray(1802-1868) and Elizabeth Stennit (1802-1880) . Although very proud of his origins and called Yorkie Gray, he came to Canada around 1860. He is the only one of his family to come to Canada. He married here and had a family of 6 children. He died in 1883. Most of the rest of the family stayed in Yorkshire but at least one of George's nephews left for Australia. Would love to find out more about George's family.
