  I would like to know what the significance of the number above the name on this tombstone is. I am

assuming that it is tied to a service record.  The person in question died during the Civil War and if

this number can be tied to documents,  I would appreciate it if someone would let me know.

Thanks

Hi Norman;

I can't answer the question on the significance of the numbers, but if you also post to the US civil war group, someone there may be able to help.

I cannot say for sure, but I seem to remember that it the site location within the cemetery (provided this is national cemetery).  I read some information on this before, but can't remember where.  If I remember correctly, national cemeteries mark their graves numerically and put the site number on the tombstone (back I think).  If you haven't done so yet, you might call the cemetery and inquire with the.
Thats a wonderful question, I would like to know also.
