I am trying to find out when Margaret Godbolt died, and when she married her husband, Samuel Halls.  I think that she died sometime between the birth of her last child in 1863 and the 1871 Canadian Census (but 1881 may be possible too).  She married Samuel sometime between his arrival in Canada in 1842 and the birth of their first child in 1849.  Samuel and his brothers settled just southwest of London, and just southeast of Exeter.  There is a cluster of Godbolt's in Peel County in Albion township, and this cluster later moved to the same area as Samuel Halls and some of his brothers, just southeast of Exeter in Huron county.  According to the census records Margaret Godbolt was born in Ontario about 1815.  There are also some Godbolts in Middlesex County as well.  I do not know who her parents or siblings were.

Any tips/help/hints would be much appreciated.

I find the following in 1852 census Middlesex Co., Westminster: HALLS, Samuel 30, Eng, Margaret 36, James 4, Mary 1

also Halls John 24 Eng, Sarah 36, Th 34, Elizabeth 34, William 8, Louisa 6, and James 20

Thanks Debbie.  Re-reading my message I can see I  wasn't clear enough - sorry :(

What I am actually looking for is Margaret's marriage and death dates.  I have traced her husband and family throughout Ontario, but have had no luck finding either a marriage or death date for her (he died in 1906 in Huron county, but she isn't buried with him).  I am fairly sure that the marriage occurred in either Peel/Cardwell county or in Middlesex.  I don't know where the death occurred, Peel/Cardwell, Middlesex, or Huron counties are the most likely.

there is no Cardwell county? When you speak of Huron Co. are you still saying Ontario? or Michigan?. Difficult to find marriage records prior to 1851 unless religion known and then may be circuit rider

Hi Debbie,

Everything I am refering to is in Ontario.  Cardwell was an administrative district/County that was in use between approximately 1871 and 1901 and took up Albion, Bolton, and Caledon townships from Peel, and two other townships, Adjala and Mono, from Simcoe.

In terms of religion, Samuel Halls and Margaret were listed in the 1851 and 1861 censuses as Bible Christians.  The entire Halls family was Bible Christians, a Methodist group.  The Godbolts have various denominations listed, but they are all subsets of the Methodists as far as I can tell, eg Congregationalist,  Wesleyan Methodist, or Primitive Methodist.

Beyond that, both the 1851 and 1861 censuses agree that Margaret Godbolt was born in Upper Canada, though one gives a birthdate of 1815 and the other of 1827.  I know it's the same family because Samuel and the children all have the same birthdates.
