I read that St. Onge was primarily inhabited by Heugenots, although all of the records from my ancestors originating there are through the Catholic Church in NF. Anybody have a take on which surnames are Heugenot?

Not quite sure if you mean HEUGENOT as a surname or if you are talking about the Protestant group of Huguenots. If you mean Huguenots then it is a religious group and everyone with the same surname does not mean they are of the same religion.  In North America it was mainly Catholics who settled in Canada and if you were Protestant you had to convert to Catholicism. In New Amsterdam (now New York) and the south there were many Huguenots.  It is confusing because French-Canadian Catholics moved to the States and eventually spelling would change and it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the different families in regards to their origin.  For example, I collect all French-Canadian TREMBLAYs (and various spellings), there are also Huguenot TREMBLEYs that settled in New Jersey and spread out, which meant that I have to collect both to sort them out.

Two groups here on genealogy wise may be of help:

Perhaps these will help in your research.   You make the statement "through the Catholic Church in NF", by NF do you mean New France?  If so, as I mentioned the Protestants would have to renounce their religion and convert to the Catholic religion.  Good luck in your search, Jim.

PS, I have a group here on French-Canadians Descendants.

Thanks for your response. I did join the group, which looks to be very informative. I was in fact referring to the religion, and particularly I am researching the Auger line in Ste. Emmelie, Lotbiniere. The original immigrant was Louis Auger (1667 Saintonge) who married Antoinette Barabe.

Ouch! I will just miss the conference in June, but have already made arrangements to stay with relatives later in the month. Hopefully, there will be a way to participate on-line.
