Hi. My Coleman line is way back in my family tree and a short one. So far all in United States. I descend from Robert Coleman of Mobjack Bay, Virginia.
Nova
Would that be the Robert Coleman who married Ann Spilsby?
Mine are from Co Sligo in Ireland as well. Immigrated to Boston, MA. = )
Hello, my name is Woody Coleman and I am new to the group and to Genealogy Wise. I am researching the family of Henry Allen Colman, my 3rd great grandfather, who was born 28 Jan 1814 in Putnam county, Georgia, son of George Colman, date of birth unknown, and said to be from South Carolina but possibly North Carolina. George Colman's wife was Nancy Burford, born 18 Dec 1782 in North Carolina, daughter of Phillip T. Burford and Rebecca Clack (or Clark) of Warren county, North Carolina. My family is of Scot-Irish descent. A YSEARCH comparison of my DNA matches me most closely to the surname of O'Kane or Kane of Ireland. The locations most often cited for the matches I made with the surname O'Kane and its variations is Dungiven.
I am researching William (Lee?) Coleman, born 8 Jan 1801 in Virginia; died before 3 July 1837 in Meade Co., Kentucky. He was the son of Josiah Coleman. William married Elizabeth Swinford on 22 Dec 1825 in Meade Co., Kentucky. She apparently died before him. They had three children, Mary Ann, Jane Elizabeth and John Shepherd. Josiah Coleman is the elusive one. He died between 1825/6 and 1830 either in Meade Co., KY or Hardin Co., KY. He most likely married before 1796 in Virginia. I have been unable to locate further records on him in Virginia. Other Virginia names associated with his son William in Kentucky are Fontaine, Foushee and Slaughter.
My maiden name is Coleman. The earliest Colemans in my tree were from Essex & Suffolk, England, and came to Virginia in the mid 1600's. My branch ended up in Missouri, near the Kansas border, and Indiana before that.
My Coleman ancestors are from Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Daniel Coleman moved there asa child from Cumberland County, VA. Daniel was an officer in the War of 1812. My grandfather, Robert Harvey Coleman, came to Texas from Danville as a young man. His father was James Cobbs Coleman who fought the War Between the States in Pickett's Brigade and one of the few who survived the charge at Gettysburg. I have very little information on Coleman ancestors except my direct line. I suspect the family came from Ireland as did my Connally and Blake ancestors, but I do not have any idea where from or when.
My Coleman family is from Goodworth Clatford in Hampshire England. The spelling of their name was Collman originally and gradually moved to Coleman. Clement Collman married Katherine Holeridge in 1695 at Goodworth Clatford. Their only son Clement was born there in 1704. Clement and Katherine had a pub in Goodworth Clatford and Katherine continued to run the pub even after the death of Clement before 1721. Clement the son married Dinah Bever bef 1737 at Upper Clatford Hampshire and their son John Coleman married Elizabeth Pearce 7 Oct 1771 at Abbotts Ann Hampshire. Their daughter Sarah was my 3x great grandmother and married to Thomas Blake 10 Jun 1792 at Upper Clatford Hampshire. My family remained in England until the early 1900s.
I have traced back as far as my GG Grandfather, Isaac Coleman (Colman) who was born in 1797 in VA...my mother always thought that it was Amelia County, but I have not been able to prove this...he married a Christy or Christian (last name UK) about 1831 in Hickman County, KY...they started their family there having William b. 1832, Matilda b. Abt 1834, John b. 1835, Martha b. 1838, Isaac b. 1840, Sarah b. 1842...they were all born in KY...from there they went to Montgomery Co., IL and had Richard b. 1845, Aaron b. 1848 and then to Bond Co., IL where they had my G Grandfather Martin b. 1852...Isaac died in 1854 in Bond Co.. IL. When my Grandfather, Harold Wilson Coleman was a little boy, he found Isaac's grave in a field...I am still trying to find Christy's maiden name and the name of Isaac's parents.
