I would guess some time in the late 1800's. This is an artist's drawing/rendering so there could have been some embellishments. I did do a google search on dating old photographs and came across this link which suggests (in one of the 1880 links) that it might have been in 1881.

Hope this helps some.

Is your Geneva Dempsey the one who married Isaac Skinner? If so, I found them living next door to each other before they were married in the 1900 census for Bethel, Perquimans, North Carolina. Under "Color or Race" both are listed as "B" (African American). Have you done any research on the family? I have done some African American research for other people. The picture might have been rendered around their wedding. She was 17 in 1900 and may have married shortly thereafter.

Just wanted to know if you received my reply get back to me when you can.

Thanks again,
Lois
Lois,
Sorry, I have been kind of busy. I know I found something on Issac, but right now, I don't remember what it was. I'll revisit my notes tomorrow and get back to you.

The style of clothing indicates the turn of the century.
Dear Lois.

My great great grandfather was Dempsey Skinner from Hertford NC. I have conflicting birthdates that range from 1814 to 1820. Although I know his parent's name, Richard & Jane, and his own children, I know nothing of his siblings, or his wife Sylvia's maiden name.

I took a DNA test through 23 And Me, and to date no other Skinners have revealed themselves making it difficult to piece the puzzle together.

The reason I'm writing is I'm playing a hunch that Geneva Dempsey Skinner is related to Dempsey Skinner maybe a sister, or perhaps a neice.

The photo was no help, but I'll run it by my sister. That part of North Carolina allow interracial bonding at least until the 1800s, so there are quite a few.mixed race people from the area.
Oops...After reading further, I'm about 60years ahead of you.

If I'm related to Geneva, I think the closest.would be 3rd cousin once removed or something like that. I was able to learn that Dempsey &.Sylvia cam to Cambridge Massachusetts sometime in 1861 or 1862. They had 2 daughters about 2 years apart. 1 was born in NC, the other in MA. Therefore Geneva could not be their descendant. However, Richard & Sylvia's siblings were probably still in the area. It's possible that Sylvia's maiden name was also Skinner since slaves took on the name of their master in this part of the country. Believe it or not, belonging to an influential master had benefits under shaky circumstances.
