Were the Quaker Powells to Philadelphia were Welsh? I connect to them tangentially, being descended from a sibling each of mayors Joseph Wilcox & Samuel Rhoads.
Possible, but I don't really know? I just know that some Powells, which used to be Howell, and 1st- HyWel. came over here to Va I believe.
My husband's mother was a Howell/s born in Newport and we've managed to trace her Howell/s family back to Chepstow any help?
At www.google.com, type in Mike John Monmouthshire. On the home page click on "Chepstow." All of the parish records for Chepstow have been typed up and indexed. I have Howell ancestors from St. Arvans about 4 k from Chepstow.
Im not sure about anything too much past my 3rd GGF Levi Powell. This is my BrickWall. The town that I have heard of in Wales is Breckonshire I beleive. And the "Castle Madoc" was owned by the Powells around the 11century, and the name would have been Hywel then.

Thanks
I have Powells, an Ann Powell 1803, my third great grandmother, married to an Edward Richards in Merthyr Tydfyl. I have nothing on her ancestry, anyone able to help?
It was interesting to read that Powell used to be Howell and before that Hywel. A lot of the males in my family descended from Ann and Edward were called Howell.
The Powell came from a mispronunciation of Ap Howell which is son of Howell.

The search that I am doing is for siblings, and parents of Jeffrey Powell, married Mary Verry, Nov 09, 1813, in Aconbury, Herefordshire.  It is my belief that Jeffrey may have been born and raised at Llywel, Breckonshire.
