I began this group a few days ago. So far no one (including me) has shared any family recipes. I have one I will look up and post here, as soon as I can, it is for Confederate Army Soup. Does anyone else have vintage recipes they can share? If not how about something your Grandma made that you can't live without cooking every now and then.

Today I made a dish I remember from my childhood. It is Zucchini Casserole. Layer thinly sliced zucchini, cracker crumbs, Parmesean cheese and tomato sauce (thinned a little if you like!) I microwaved it unitl the zucchini was done, (not mushy) and the cheese melted. It is very good with an unusual taste!

Does anyone else have a recipe they can post here?

Here's my mother's recipe for Breaded Tomatoes

She got this from her mother, who got it from her mother, and on it goes...

Breaded Tomatoes

Enough home-canned tomatoes to feed your family
A few slices of stale bread, torn into small pieces
A little bit of sugar, stirred in (approx. 1/2 tsp. per 1 lb. tomatoes)
A 'dab' of butter

Heat all thoroughly and serve hot. Yummy!
This was a family favorite when I was growing up. My grandmother made it when my mom and uncle were growing up also, but since my uncle wouldn't eat bread, it was always called "tomatoes and goodstuff" I hadn't thought of this in years and now I am going to have to make it for my family! Thanks for sharing. It brought back great memories.
I thought I would add a recipe that my great grandmother always made. I have no idea how far back the recipe goes in the family, but it has been loved by all who try it. This is written as great grandma wrote it.

Finger Pie
pour milk, a couple of spoons of flour, butter the size of an egg, and a couple spoons of sugar into a uncooked pie crust. stir together with your pointy finger. sprinkle liberally with cinnamon and bake.
it makes a wonderful cinnamony ( I think that is a word...and if it isn't it shoud be!) custard pie (without the eggs).
My great grandmother made a potato dish, which her daughter-in-law made, as did her daughter-in-law (my mother); my sister and I called it grand-ma potatoes. I haven't made it in a long time, but I'll look it up and post it here.

Hi My grandmother also made a dish with eggs and potatoes. Peel and slice 3 or 4 potatoes put some oil in frying pan add potatoes and coat with oil salt and pepper to taste fry potatoes till crispy and fork tender cover pan. While potatoes are cooking mix some eggs in a bowl 3 or 4 add a little water or milk whatever you prefer mix well.When potatoes are done add eggs and cook till set. Kinda ends up like an omelet can eat in a sandwich or plain. My nana made this to get us to eat eggs. Nobody wanted to hurt Nanas feelings so we ate it.

I grew up on breaded tomatoes as well as the Zucchini Casserole. My Mother used canned tomatoes and did not add any sugar. I love it. I have added a little Parmesan cheese for my own touch!
My Mother used to talk about making "clabber!" I need to look it up and see what it actual was. I believe it was milk that was allowed to sour and then poured into a cheesecloth. The liquid would drip out and the clabber was left. Has anyone else heard of this?
Yes, my grandmother made clabber, and so did my mother, making it just as you said. Very good over strawberries!
Fried Mush

One of my favorite breakfasts!!


* 1 c. cornmeal
* 1 c. cold water
* 3 c. water
* 1 teas. salt
* 1T. butter, bacon fat, or veg. oil
* 2 T. flour

# Stir cornmeal into 1 c. cold water in a bowl
# Bring 3 c. water and salt to a boil in a large saucepan.
# Add cornmeal mixture to the boiling water gradually, stirring constantly.
# Cook for 5 to 10 minutes or until thickened.
# Pour into loaf pan and let cool.
# Cover with plastic wrap and fridge over night.
# Slice 1/4 to 1/2 inch slices and dredge lightly in flour.
# Fry in hot butter, or bacon fat or oil until golden brown. I use maple Syrup.

What an absolutely delicious breakfast, especially on a cold winter day!
That does sound good! My family never made that but years ago there was something they bought at the store and I believe it was somthing like mush. I haven't thought about it in years. It was in a roll like sausage with a plastic wrapper. They would slice and fry it. I am not sure if it is still sold.

Another thing my Mother loved was brick chili. We lived in CA then and whenever we visited MO my Mother had to buy some.

I know these aren't vintage, but they are cooking memories for me.

Today I was reaching back to my childhood again. I made Mother's recipe for stuffed peppers. Hers was pretty basic but sure satisfied my cravings. Ran out of room will will continue. . .

Stuffed Peppers

Brown hamburger. Add onion and a little bell pepper. Salt and pepper to taste. Add rice and water. Cook until rice is done.

Steam peppers until tender but not mushy. Drain. Fill pepper shells with hamburger/rice mixture. Top with 1/2 slice of american cheese. Bake or micro. until cheese melts.

This recipe is different from others I have seen, there is no tomato sauce or other spices.
