My Cottrell brick wall is Walter E Cottrell (b. 7 Apr 1873 in NC, d. 4 May 1923 in Oxford, NC), married in 1895 to Ada V Dixon (b. 2 Feb 1874 in Granville, NC, d. 20 Jan 1943 in Granville, NC). I have no idea who Walter's parents are. Death certificate lists parents as "don't know" and I cannot locate a birth certificate. If anyone has a connection, I'd be thrilled to hear about it!
My Cottrell brick wall is my Great-Great-Grandfather, Lawrence Marion Cottrell. Lawrence was b. in Georgia 12 May 1852 d. 2 Oct 1923 in Garvin County, Oklahoma, is buried in Lewis Cemetery, Garvin County, Oklahoma with his wife Martha Jane Tucker. There is no information as to who LM's father was, but according to Census records, his father's birthplace was North Carolina and his mother's South Carolina. I have heard the names Richard, John and George as to being the possible name for LM's father. At some point Lawrence went to Arkansas, I have not tracked down a date for that, but do know his marriage to Martha occurred 21 Apr 1872 in Arkansas. It has been told to me through relatives that Lawrence's family was separated by the Civil War and that he lost all contact with a brother and a sister. During the last years of his life he did find his sister; however, I do not have names of his siblings at this point in time. I have been looking through Census records from 1860 to see if I can find a male Cottrell that was born in North Carolina and moved to Georgia but so far have come up with nothing. Any help would be very greatly appreciated :)
Hi Karen,
Which records do you have so far for Lawrence (any census records, etc.)?
Lisa,

I have found information on the Cottrell (cottrellweb.org) that has helped somewhat. Lawrence appears as early as 1866 in Arkansas probate records. I sent off today to the Historical Society of White County, Arkansas to have copies made. The records indicate James Cox was granted guardianship of Lawrence. I am very anxious to find out if there is any usable information. I have found Lawrence on the following Census records: 1870 in Marshall, White, Arkansas, listed as "L Cartwell", being in the James Cox household; 1880 Census he is listed "Marion Calwell" in Palarm, Faulkner, Arkansas; 1900 Census in Township 3, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, listed as Lawrence M Cottrell; 1920 Census Walker, Garvin, Oklahoma listed as Lawrence M Cottrell.
Cartwell and Calwell are variations I never considered. I'll have to make a note of that in my searches.

I spent some time looking for Lawrence to see if I could make any connections, but I'm insanely busy right now getting ready for the school year to begin again. I hope to have more time once the roar of September slows down. In the meantime good luck with your searching!
Thanks, Lisa.

I received the information and was disappointed. There is no mention of any relatives at all, the only names that appear are Lawrence's, James' and the officials. I was hoping that there would be some sort of mention, you know something like "Lawrence's parents John Doe and Jane Doe, whose fate is unknown" or something like that...but nothing. I did find something else I thought interesting, however. On the same Cottrell website, I did also find another Cottrell living in White County, Arkansas that appear to have moved from Georgia, as a daughter, around age 15, shows to be born there. While I have nothing to connect or to prove, logic is trying to kick in and tell me that there has to be some connection. As I have stated, the known facts I have are that Lawrence was born in Georgia, at some point ended up in Arkansas and his family was separated because of the Civil War. I have been rolling the idea around in my head that perhaps this Cottrell that appears with another family is his sister (I will have to go back to the site to get names and dates) and they did not know there were in the same area, perhaps the families did not know each other. I was also thinking perhaps a cousin, but still have trouble trying to understand that if this Cottrell girl is relation, why they weren't together. I am going to see if I can do more family digging with living relatives and see if I can get any stories as to how the family became separated...we will see.

My GGGG Grps Thomas Cotterell and 'Sarah' - they created my GGG Grm Caroline Cotterell b.1834 Holcombe, Devon, UK d.1901 Wellington, Somerset.

Caroline Cotterell married Thomas Tooze (my GGG Grf) 1853 Tiverton, Devon.) and they produced another Thomas Tooze b. 1866 Wellington, Somerset, who married a Mary Sloman in 1888.

I would like some more information (if any exists) about the first Thomas Cotterell and Sarah that I mentioned.

Thanks,

Shaun Tooze (stooze@gmail.com)
