William Edmon Gardner (abt 1823-abt 1868) of Mason county, IL...my great, great grandfather...and my brickwall.

Due to one of our daughter's moving in temporarily, kids in tow, I am finding free time to work on my tree and my blog to be in short supply... so, today will be a very short look at my brickwall...my great, great grandfather.
I am DESPERATELY searching for information on my great, great grandfather...major brickwall. I have been beating my brains out over this man for over 10 years! The only information I have is this:

William Edmon Gardner B. OHIO or ENGLAND approx.1823

By 1850, he was living in Tazewell county IL as a farm hand for Charles Seiwell.

He was listed (as Edmund) in the 1855 IL state census along side his brother-in-laws Amos and David Grover:

On June 3, 1855 he married Alzina Grover,
they had 5 children:

Almira 1856
William M 1859
Charles Henry 1861 (my g grandfather)
Henrietta "Nettie" 1863
Rebecca 1867

I know he died sometime between 1867 and 1869. After his death Elzena became a housekeeper for Ferdinand Schappaugh (she appears in his household in the 1870 census) and later married him.in June 1872
.
Beyond this... I have NOTHING!
No parents names, no sibling names. He MAY have served in the Civil war, I found a couple that COULD be him, but there are no records of his death that I can find...It appears he went by the name Edmon/Edmond based on the way he is listed in census records. He also lists Ohio as his place of birth on the census...YET...My Great-grandfather Charles Henry's death records list his father as William Edmon Gardner...born in ENGLAND! SO confusing!!
