Yes, We are descended from Nathaniel Merrill. Nathaniel Merrill and Joanna Kinney would be my 8th great grandparents.

I'm working on writing up the story of Sherman, it's pretty interesting and a bit scandalous.

Hey Caren, I thought of something you may not know.  Caleb and Daniel Shreve had a sister Mary Sheffield who was an ancestor of Stephen A. Douglas, debater of Abraham Lincoln.  You can verify this on his ahnentafel available at Famouskin.com.  On the matter of what Huttel means, I found that in parts of Bavaria, Huttler means "carpenter."  The u has an umlaut over it, so that's why it was changed to Huettel in English because we don't have an umlaut.  Jack

Hi Caren.  Thanks for your two lines.  It seems our lines split off in both cases right immediately after immigration.  Thomas Shreve or Sheriff had Caleb and Daniel, and Richard Haines had Richard and Joseph (born after the death of his father at sea).  Bet you don't have any posthumous ancestors like that.  On another subject, Huettel sounds like it could be Amish.  Is it?  And do you know what it means in German?  I am really into the meanings of surnames. Thanks, Jack

Hi Caren,

We may be closer related thru the Haines family (Richard who died sea in 1682) than thru the Shreves, who split off in New England with Caleb (your ancestor?) going to New Jersey and Daniel (mine) eventually off to Virginia.

The Knapp's that I am closely related to come from Joseph, who, I believe was born in Prussia in August 1790 and immigrated to the US by 1840 when he shows up in Buffalo, NY.  He is my 2nd GGF.  I do have a Nicholas Knopp way back in my ancestry.  He lived in Suffolk England in the 1600's.  I am related to him through along series of marriages.

Hi Caren, Thanks for the welcome. Yes Ivins and Ivens are variants, however, we have never found a link between the PA/MD Ivens family and the NJ Ivins'. However, my husband was friends with Jimmy (James) Ivins from Riverside NJ before he passed away at a young age. We are still in touch with his son and I have a distant cousin on my paternal grandmother's side who is friends with Frank Ivins from NJ. Really is a small world when we start to search.

I'm a bit new to this but it appears that my family was from Joseph Peck (Beccles 1587).

In trying to trace the family back from Joseph to John Peck of Belton through the Pedigree of Peck,I find that there appears to be some controversy over whether Joseph Peck's grandfather, Robert Peck of Beccles, was the son of John Peck of Wakefield' according to the Committee on English and Foreign Research.  If you have any clarification this issue, I would appreciate hearing from you.

HI, Caren! Sorry for the delay in replying. my Mayflower people are from Francis Warren and Francis Cooke. Eventually I plan to research farther back than 1620, but for now I'm working on my father's side, the Stecker/Stechers and Hochbaums in Germany.

My grandmother (maternal) was a Purcell. Her father was James Purcell b. 9-2-1866  Mich. d. 12-15-1960 (Mich) m. Anna Metzger b.5-4-1880 Mich. d. 4-10-1957 Mich. James Purcell's father I believe was from Kilkenny, Ireland. His fathers name was Antony Metzger (Anthony Metzger) born in Germany. I had my husband & brother both do tests on Family Tree & it is believed that my mother's Irish line & my husband's Irish line are way back cousins but I'll probably never be able to make the connection.
