i'm not sure whether you want suggestions on the name or generally on research, my suggestions would be to collect as much info as poss on his family such as birth dates etc names datesand towns in essex then you have a reasonable start, be aware some names are common to areas and can be qauite difficult to trace, also join a surname group and area group and there are many valuable resources about
