Youngs in Culross parish, Perthshire, 1694

A list of people surnamed Young in Culross Parish, Perthshire, in the Hearth Tax returns of 1694. The list includes Youngs living in the burgh of Kincardine which was transferred from Culross Parish to neighbouring Tulliallan Parish in 1672.
Culross and Tulliallan Parishes are now part of the county of Fife, Scotland.

John Sands of Langsyde and James Young
[Sands of Langside was a "small laird". Perhaps James Young was a farm labourer who lived on the estate. Langside "a property north-east of Blair Castle Mains and east of Righead"]
Robert Young in Parlahill
[Parlahill is spelt Parlourhill and Parlyhill in other records. A hill near Culross Abbey churchyard]
Betricx Young (poor in the toun of Culross)

Marjorie Young (poor in the toun of Culross)

Thomas Young (toun of Kinkardine)
John Young (toun of Kinkardine)
John Young and Janet Patoun (toun of Kinkardine)
[Janet Patoun, John's wife?]
Isobel Young (Culross and Tulliallan the Laird of Kinkardine's interest)
Gilbert Young (Laird of Blairhall)
[ meaning, I believe, tenant of the laird of Blairhall]

John Young (Valleyfield)
[In 1693 a John Young in Valleyfield was summoned before the Culross parish elders accused of "charming", ie., effecting cures of illnesses of people and animals by reciting prayers over them and rubbing them with a stone. He was ordered to desist.]
Isobel Young (poor within the parishes of Culross and Tulliallan)

The spelling of Kincardine, Beatrix, town, as in the original. Identification of most place-names is from Beveridge's history of Culross and Tulliallan.

Addendum, 22.7.2021: "Alexander Young, minister of the second charge at Culross in the presbytery of Dunfermline from 1684 until deprived in 1689, and still resident  in the parish in 1695, graduated MA at Edinburgh in 1681."                                             (www.scan.org.uk)
