I posted a Forum about Inconsistencies that addresses this. Another on Nightmares in the field.
Historical documents are rarely created with genealogists in mind. Record keepers find it difficult to enforce the registration of various life events, even when required by law. That's why research is so thrilling, and why we love the alternate sources and undervalued sources.

Comment by Lori Shoemaker Hellmund on August 12, 2009 at 1:07pm: They do have some things. I was able to find some great newspaper articles about my husband's great uncle. It is still very limited though.
