The Genealogy & Family History Social Network

Genealogy Topics that of late run across my screen have been varied and interesting and wondering if we need to back up or slow down and re address our research.

One I liked was what are your favorite top websites to use for research. This is a question that comes with many answers, at least that is my prospective.

Lets say we are doing New England research, and had just stopped tracking the name in VA.
Well in Virginia you would use state records, historical societies, usgenweb.org, local genealogical societies and Google and Ancestry and other paid sites at the end.

But if your now looking in Vermont and New Hampshire with early time line you would want to start with the usgenweb.org. ( always start there) then move to rootsweb.org and then move to New England Historical Genealogical Society files. Ancestry is okay to look at but there is much on line that is free and less costly than Ancestry.com to start with.

Remembering that less than 10% of data is on line. You want to remember to use lds.org and go to their library for the review of their files.

LDS.ORG is a great site to go, tis better at the library, set and read films and files and books. You can ask questions of the working members for assistance also.

So it depends on where your researching and time frame for what sites are better for you to use.

I can say I always start with usgenweb.org and then rootsweb.com then branch out to see what else I can learn.

There are so many places to look and seek and maybe find answers. Keep looking in University's,
colleges, law libraries, state resources, federal resources. Local libraries also may hold the clue.

The local historical or genealogical society is always good for assistance. If not, why are they
an organization. I say that because recently I learned a couple of them refused to help a potential client and I do not think that the group was aware of this rebuff.

The person said when I asked them if they considered being a member and they said," why, they won't even answer my question if they have any data on family name?"

This is an east coast group. I am debating writing to them and asking them the reason for the rebuff.
