But he was only 15

When searching for information about my great grandfather I came across his will.  It wasn't really a will but a little tattered sheet of paper written 31 yrs prior to his death that was submitted to the court as his will.  The paper only said "My son Jesse L Harshbarger is to have one thousand dollars less from my estate than any other of my children because he never did any work for me or my family".  This was written in April of 1911 and g grandfather did not die until 1942  My grandfather was born in November 1895 and his mother my great grandmother died in Dec 1895 from childbirth complications.  My grandfather was the youngest of 7 full siblings and because of the ages my great grandmothers parents her sisters raised my granddad.  There is more to the story one of the sisters that helped take care of him actually married his father 5 yrs after her sister's death but my granddad remained with his grandparents.  

I just find the statement great grandfather made "he never did any work for me or my family" to be very hard but I do realize that in 1911 times were very different and 16 was old enough to work and even marry. 

I can't help think there was something in particular that triggered that type of statement but to hold onto the paper and the feelings that triggered writting the will for 31 yrs just makes me wonder what type of man my Great grandfather actually was.

There are times I wish I could just ask my ancestors "what were you thinking of!"
