Early Settlers of Sullivan County, North Carolina: Now Tennessee

Nestled between the mountain ridges of eastern Tennessee lies a region rich in history. An area visited by explorers, Native Americans, and early pioneer families, a land that speaks of traditions and folklore, stories, and legends. Sullivan County, North Carolina, was the second county located in present-day Tennessee to exist. After establishing Washington County in 1777, Sullivan County began the journey with North Carolina in 1779. The county’s name originated in honor of …

What are Living Family Trees?

Most people studying genealogy are looking for ancestors.  A family tree of such ancestors is ascendant - it goes backward in time.  Living Family Trees are descendant - they come forward in time.  I have found it interesting to look at descendant family trees from great grandparents forward.  Especially where teaching children is concerned, it is valuable to show relationships in current time.

Riley Familiy Early 1800s in Alabama

Hi All,

This is my first post. I am researching the Riley family in Alabama in the early 1800's. My g-g-great grandfather Milton Riley was born in South Carolina around 1813 and died in Mississippi around 1900. Or, may also died in Buena Vista, Monroe Co. Alabama after 1900 but before 1910. However, he lived most of his life in Tuscaloosa Alabama.

I think I have hit a brick wall when I look for his parents and siblings. I think he  father was William Riley, but there are…

The Amazing Story that Went Before -- Henry's Story

Starting to blog about family history -- looking into a story passed down about my maternal great-grandfather's parentage. We probably all have a story like this somewhere in the tree.

I'm new to the site - please help

I have a few family pictures that I was able to scan after the passing of my Mother. However, she was the last living member of her family that would know anyone in the photos. They are not labeled and I would like to ask if anyone recognizes anyone in the photos.

An Introduction

Hello!

I'm new to Genealogy Wise, but not to genealogy itself, so I thought I'd start off with an introduction post.

On my Mum's side I have a collection of common names and very uncommon names. My maternal grandmother's line follows the Harrises of Upper Holloway in Islington, London and the Nevols family of Shropshire (the spelling of "Nevols" appears to be unique to my family line so if you have that spelling in your ancestry there's a high chance you're…

My research begins

Being new to family tree research I had to spend quite a while finding the correct method of going about this without spending tons of money being a student I simply couldn't afford it.

I began by asking family members, and managed to uncover the whereabouts of my great, great granddad, who actually came from Yorkshire in England. My family tree so far has dated back 6 generations. I plan to use this information and record it in a database, then build out a family tree…
