Preserving my Past

This is my first blog post, so please bear with me. I've been digging up both my husband's and my own family history since about 1985, but blogging is new to me. I hope to use this blog to help me organize and clarify my discoveries...I tend to be a bit ADD in my research, I set a goal to focus on and inevitably find myself side-tracked, digging into an entirely different person or branch than I had intended!

Since I am currently typing this (PAINSTAKINGLY) on an on-screen keyboard,…

The Amazing Story that Went Before -- Henry's Story

Starting to blog about family history -- looking into a story passed down about my maternal great-grandfather's parentage. We probably all have a story like this somewhere in the tree.

Research Notes for Edward Ward and Son Joel Ward and Grandson William L. Ward in Richland, Wayne, Ashland and Knox Counties of the State of Ohio

Joel Ward was born in Richland County, Troy Township. Ohio in 1831. I found a great map of the Original Richland County in the "Past Finder" Newsletter from the Richland County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, it was in Volume 11 #2 April-June 1992 on Page 29. I located this publication at the Georgina Cole Library in Carlsbad, California. The map was originally from "Ellsworth's Original Land Records of Richland County, Ohio". On this map Troy is in R19. I found a more detailed map on… Continue

Are Your Ancestors from Venne, Osnabrück region of Germany?

I became solidly hooked on Genealogy when our friend and historian Udo Thoerner showed my husband and me the Büning ancestral home, a farm cottage, in the village of Venne, Germany with the names of his 4th-ggrandparents inscribed over the door and the year 1704 by the builder's name . What led us to this discovery was Thoerner's twenty years of curiosity and research about what happened to over 2000 emigrants from his home village of Venne and neighboring farm communities in Westfalen,…

Pauline P. Johnson and Isaac Newton Griffith

When she was eighteen, Pauline P. Johnson went against her family’s long-standing Quaker traditions and married another lapsed Quaker, Isaac Newton Griffith. Pauline was descended from the Johnsons of Scotland and the Moormans from Isle of Wight, England, who had come to Virginia as early as 1619.

Thomas Moorman returned to England after serving a year in the service of the Virginia Company of London and was granted property. Although Thomas never returned from England, his son,… Continue

Shameless Plug or PSA, however you want to look at it

One of the toughest things in genealogy can be figuring out where people went and/or came from, of course. I'm particularly stuck on the PARKER brick wall at the moment, which never gets me anywhere. My great-great grandmother Mary Parker (sometimes listed on censuses with the middle initial J, and whose daughter and my great-grandmother was Mary Jane Wade) married my great-great grandfather George W. Wade in 1876 in Clam Lake, Wexford County, Michigan. The marriage certificate says she was 17… Continue

Researching Frambers/ Frambes

Thought I would post this here in my blog in case anyone happens to see it that lives in Clermont Co., Ohio.

I'm in need of a will for 2 gentlemen: Peter Frambes and his son Andrew Frambes. There could be an "r" in the surname "Frambers."

Peter left a will and Guardianship in 1873 and Andrew & wife Emeline left an estate in 1889.

If anyone in Clermont Co., Ohio would be willing to look these wills up for me please contact me privately at:… Continue

More Swartz info!

I got Jacob Swartz' will transcribed and was a bit surprised by what it contains. It definitely narrows down his death date and separates his children into first wife and second wife.

In a nutshell, here is what it says:

10 April 1852 - original will made. Gives $5 each to sons Frank, Anthony and Joseph. Leaves all land, stock and personal goods to wife Gertrude. Sons Nicholas, John and Peter to divide said property after her death.

14 May 1854 - codicil made.… Continue

What a little cutie!

Last November, I received notice that Google Images had digitized photos from LIFE magazine. Most people are probably thinking...big whoop. But in my family, this is an exciting thing.

A little history first - my mother grew up in northwest Ohio where, in September of1950, a Polio epidemic had broken out. Well, LIFE magazine was all over this story and wouldn't you know - my mother had her picture taken with two of her brothers and it was enshrined forever within the pages of the… Continue

Little Jessie G. Parrish

There has always been a story told over and over again by my mother and grandmother. I doubt it was told to us as a warning regarding the dangers of playing near railroad tracks - we never lived near railroad tracks. I think perhaps it was probably one of the most devastating family events, so it was a story that was retold over and over to preserve the memory of this little boy as best as possible?

Oddly enough, before I began… Continue
