Hemphills in 1808

Two hundred years ago, my Hemphill relatives were all in the Burke/Buncombe county area in North Carolina.

Captain Thomas Hemphill (1746-1826), my 5x (twice) and 6x great-grandfather, lived in Burke County, North Carolina in 1810. On April 4, 1808, he entered a grant for 300 acres lying on both sides of the French Broad river in Buncombe . . . → : …

Mrs. Hemphill’s Sheep

This amusing anecdote refers to my five-times great-grandmother, Elizabeth (Patton) Hemphill. It is part of a series of Biographical Sketches from Burke County, North Carolina that were written by by Col Thomas George Walton (1815-1905) and were first published in the old Morganton Herald in 1894.

Murray County Marriage Records

I visited the Murray County Probate Court last week and came away with nine copies of marriage records. I went in with a pedigree chart highlighting direct ancestors who were married (or who I thought may have been married) in Murray County. I had marriage dates for many of them, so my goal was to get . . . → : CONTINUE READING

Connections

It fascinates me to find connections between different branches of my family tree, possibly because I’ve always known there was a connection between my parents (besides the obvious).

Before you start thinking “cocktails in Appalachia,” I should explain that this is not a close connection. My father’s (maternal) great-grandmother is my mother’s (paternal) first cousin twice removed. . . . → :…

Where was Dave Butler before 1900?

David S. Butler was my great-great-grandfather. I know that he was in Murray County, Georgia in the 1900s. Working backward, he died in 1938, and I have census records for 1930, (research gap: I don’t have 1920), 1910, and 1900. Each census gives Georgia as his place of birth. I have nearby Adairsville as his birthplace, . . . → : CONTINUE…

Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western North Carolina: Burke County, Volume I

I found a great source record last week at the library. It’s a book called Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western North Carolina: Burke County, Vol. 1. The author is Emmet R. White and it was published in 1984 by Southern Historical Press, Inc. of Easley, S.C.

It has biographical sketches on many soldiers, including summaries of military . . . → :…

Biography of Captain Thomas Hemphill

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to attend a ceremony commemorating the service of Captain Thomas Hemphill in the American Revolution. This biography, written by Mrs. Margaret Hemphill Anthony, was included in the program for the service, which was held at Old Siloam Cemetery, near Old Fort, NC, June 13, 1998.

Butler Ancestors in 1808

Where were your ancestors 200 years ago?

In searching through my database, I’ve discovered so many people who were alive in 1808 that this post will focus on the Butler ancestors,

almost all of whom were in the western part of North Carolina, with a

few in South Carolina and one in Virginia. Continue

Thomas Young Hemphill McEntire

I found an interesting biographical sketch on my 4x great-grandfather.

(Google search is truly an amazing thing). I knew that he had

immigrated from Ireland, but the additional information is where the

gold lies. He was the second sheriff in Burke County, North Carolina

and was a member of the North Carolina legislature in 1802.

Paternal Ancestors in the Civil War

I had a conversation with my dad on Friday about his ancestors who
fought in the Civil War. I thought it would fun and interesting to put
together a list, with a summary of each person’s military service.
I’ve also included each person’s relationship to my dad (as opposed to
me, which is my usual. . .
