Quaker Genealogy-Cedar Creek, Virginia

Nestled on a wooded knoll surrounded by periwinkle lies the remains of a 300-year-old structure that once was the Cedar Creek Meeting House. Established in 1721 from land donated by Thomas Stanley, the site lies west of an old 18th-century roadbed in Hanover County, Virginia. The church site is now on an old, abandoned road just off Cedar Creek Road. The cemetery, filled with field stones, holds the remains of early congregation members. This article will recognize the early members by…

Paternal Line

I am trying to find sources for the wife of my fifth great grandfather, Robert Hunter of Giles County, Virginia. I have several names for her, but feel a mistake has been made with the name of Atkins. I feel her name is Mildred (Millie) Lewis, but cannot find any records for her birth, marriage or death. Thank you.

Joseph Burkholder will

I've been playing around with the Pennsylvania Probate files on Familysearch a lot this week. Been finding little gems left and right. Such as this will for Joseph Burkholder, my GGGGrandfather, who died in 1880. The copy I found is the will book copy, which is a transcription of the original. It reads as follows:…

Validation

I'm searching for an answer to a story that only I was told, or so I believe because no one else knows about it.  One day in the late 60's my grandmother told me story.  It wasn't a made-up before you go to bed story.  It was with wistfulness and cloudy eyes.  The kind that you share and it makes you happy and sad at the same time.  Why me and why that day, could it had been preordained that genealogy would be my forte?

She spoke about when she was little and how she and her…

Thomas Carroll enigma!

I have a brick wall and I need some new directions to go.  The problem is the name of the person is "Thomas Carroll".  I know when he was born only from his tombstone and death certificate.  The first census in which he could definitely be identified was in Fairfax Station, VA - 1860.  I have a lot of other information, but here's the problem.

From the beginning of the Irish famine and soon after, so many "Thomas Carroll"s came over on ships.  Some of them even have the same…

Native American Background?

My grandmother’s grandmother was Mary (Patterson) Whitener. Family legend has it that she was at least part Cherokee. Mary was born in Ellijay, Georgia in 1869 and married William Whitener there in 1883. They lived in Murray County, Georgia in 1900. Sometime between 1904 and 1907, they moved to Oklahoma. According to my grandmother, they moved . . . → : CONTINUE…

Where Was the Wyatt Lankford Family in 1860?

This week I’m looking for ancestors of Leaty (Lankford) West, whose gravestone I found several weeks ago. I have her parents as Wyatt Lankford and Morning Tabitha Bruer.

“Wiet” and Morning Lankford were enumerated on the 1880 Census in the Alaculsa District of Murray County, Georgia. I feel somewhat confident that these are Leaty’s parents, because they are . . . → :…

Amos and Betty Johnson Headstone

Amos Johnson and his wife Betty are buried in Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery in Gilmer County, Georgia. They may be my 3x-great-grandparents, Amos and Elizabeth; however the dates don’t quite match up.

Census records (1850 and 1860) indicate that Amos Johnson was born about 1826, while the birthdate on this stone is 1817. The stone also records Amos’ death in . . . → :…

Seeking Robert West Information

I’m looking for information on Robert West, who may have been my 3x great-grandfather. I’ve identified Robert as the father of William West, my great-great-grandfather based on two facts: 1) the Robert West family includes a William W. West in 1850 and 1860 in Polk County, Tennessee, and 2) William himself was enumerated as head of . . . → : CONTINUE…

Connections

It fascinates me to find connections between different branches of my family tree, possibly because I’ve always known there was a connection between my parents (besides the obvious).

Before you start thinking “cocktails in Appalachia,” I should explain that this is not a close connection. My father’s (maternal) great-grandmother is my mother’s (paternal) first cousin twice removed. . . . → :…

Monteville Roberts’ Family Business

Monteville Roberts owned and operated, with the help of family, the combined business establishment of a mill for grinding corn into meal and wheat into flour, a blacksmith shop, and general repair shop, all of which were vitally essential to the people. The combined enterprise, in Hamilton County, Tennessee, provided a flourishing business a home . . . → :…

Visit to New Prospect Cemetery

I visited New Prospect Church Cemetery on Saturday. I knew that some Tuckers were buried there, because I had found headstone photos on Find-a-Grave for Churchwell Branch Tucker and his wife Rosamond. I also had found a listing last week for E. M. Ellis on the Murray County Cemeteries website; the dates were very close to . . . → : CONTINUE…

Where was Dave Butler before 1900?

David S. Butler was my great-great-grandfather. I know that he was in Murray County, Georgia in the 1900s. Working backward, he died in 1938, and I have census records for 1930, (research gap: I don’t have 1920), 1910, and 1900. Each census gives Georgia as his place of birth. I have nearby Adairsville as his birthplace, . . . → : CONTINUE…

Most Wanted: Barbara Baxter Kendrick

My g-g-grandmother’s name was Barbara Baxter. I have very little information about her.

She was married to Francis Marion Kendrick on 16 Apr 1871. I can place the two of them, along with various children, in the 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, and 1930 censuses, always living in the Alaculsey District of Murray County, Georgia. She was born . . . → :…

Most Wanted – Newton Coleman Ward in Birmingham, AL

According to my grandmother, her father spent time in Birmingham working as a streetcar driver. I can place him in Georgia during each census year, so this would have been during an “in-between” time.

Newt and my great-grandmother were married in 1909. They were courting at the time this picture was taken; they are the young couple . . . → :…

Revolutionary War Soldiers of Western North Carolina: Burke County, Volume I

It has biographical sketches on many soldiers, including summaries of military . . . → :…

Biography of Captain Thomas Hemphill

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to attend a ceremony commemorating the service of Captain Thomas Hemphill in the American Revolution. This biography, written by Mrs. Margaret Hemphill Anthony, was included in the program for the service, which was held at Old Siloam Cemetery, near Old Fort, NC, June 13, 1998.

Working at “The Shoe”

United Shoe Machinery Corporation was a major employer in Beverly, Massachusetts. The locals called it “The Shoe,” and when it began manufacturing in 1902 it was the largest factory in the world at that time. By World War I it employed over 5,000 workers. Founded in 1899, they produced machines for the shoe industry, and it was one of…

Research Notes for Edward Ward and Son Joel Ward and Grandson William L. Ward in Richland, Wayne, Ashland and Knox Counties of the State of Ohio

Joel Ward was born in Richland County, Troy Township. Ohio in 1831. I found a great map of the Original Richland County in the "Past Finder" Newsletter from the Richland County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society, it was in Volume 11 #2 April-June 1992 on Page 29. I located this publication at the Georgina Cole Library in Carlsbad, California. The map was originally from "Ellsworth's Original Land Records of Richland County, Ohio". On this map Troy is in R19. I found a more detailed map on… Continue
