Mrs. Hemphill’s Sheep

This amusing anecdote refers to my five-times great-grandmother, Elizabeth (Patton) Hemphill. It is part of a series of Biographical Sketches from Burke County, North Carolina that were written by by Col Thomas George Walton (1815-1905) and were first published in the old Morganton Herald in 1894.

“The HEMPHILLs of Silver Creek and Old Fort emigrated from the North . . . → : …

Footnote Find: Mary Ellis Pension File

I’ve been toying with the idea of a Footnote subscription for some time and have even taken advantage of their seven-day free trial a few times. I finally decided to go for it. The item I found this morning makes it all worthwhile.

I’ve been researching my ancestor, Walter Ellis, Revolutionary War Veteran, in preparation for a . . . → :…

The Lifeblood of An Author Are Those All Important Reviews

I've spent well over ten years researching data from the archives of the Ministry of Culture Spain. Countless hours downloading resource documentation, more than three for each individual within the Juan Ponce de Leon immediate family, ancestors, into my computer and into my own family tree. Juan Ponce as it turned out is a cousin of mine because we have the same ancestor, Poncio de Minerva also known as Ponce de Cabrera.

As a backup to the resource…

On a recent business trip, I visited the Columbus Public Library in Columbus, GA. What an amazing genealogy collection! They have as many stacks in the genealogy wing as my local library has in the whole adult section. They also have wi-fi throughout the library, so I was able to post my notes directly to my . . . → : CONTINUE…

Biography of Captain Thomas Hemphill

Several years ago, I had the opportunity to attend a ceremony commemorating the service of Captain Thomas Hemphill in the American Revolution. This biography, written by Mrs. Margaret Hemphill Anthony, was included in the program for the service, which was held at Old Siloam Cemetery, near Old Fort, NC, June 13, 1998.

Canada's Black Settlements & The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was neither Underground, nor was it a Railroad. It was in essence a series of conductors, safe houses, trails along rivers, secret routes, sometimes walking, and other times hiding in wagons. Before Europeans arrived, North and South America was comprised of thousands of Native American Tribes. Native Cultures date back at least ten thousand years, having traveled over the Bering Strait into North…

The Christiana Resistance Precursor to the Civil War - Christiana Pennsylvania

The Christiana Resistance thought of in some corners as a precursor to the Civil War. It is one of the many events in American History that is not widely known.

"A major episode in African-American history, along with John Brown’s raid, was the Fugitive Slave Rebellion in Christiana. This event was a harbinger of the Civil War. Frederick Douglas referred to the Christiana Riot as “… the battle for liberty.”

On September 11, 1851, Slave owner Edward Gorsuch, his son… Continue
