Advice needed - Web sites for genealogy.

Hi guys,

I'd like some advice please. I'd like to make my own genealogy website/page and would like to know your own experience.

I would prefer a free site but don't mind paying a little for a good one. I have a little knowledge with building websites but am not an advanced user so the simpler the better :-)

Any suggestions?

Reunion Time

Going to a Burtoft Reunion in FL next weekend. I'm excited to meet cousins I didn't know I had.

I feel that I have to have all the genealogoy that I have all put together and organized before I go. What should I take?

A Misunderstood & Underutilized Resource

Lots of folks tend to be misinformed about LDS genealogy resources. Many changes have been going on in the past few years, which have included major revamping of the LDS genealogy website www.FamilySearch.org. I’d like to just mention a few of the resources available from the website that I feel are of real importance to genealogical researchers - and even better than Ancestry.com (because they’re free!)

From the… Continue

For My Grandparents

One aspect of my life that sometimes makes me sad is that I didn't know either set of grandparents very well. My paternal grandparents were both born and raised in a small New York town. They moved out to California after all three of their children had settled here. They moved to a small farm in Paradise and then when they could no longer keep up with the farm, they moved to Chico where they both died. My paternal grandmother died 24 Apr 1990, a day shy of her birthday. I was in seventh grade.… Continue

The DAR and My Next Move...

As some of you know, one of my major genealogy goals is to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). A few weeks ago I requested a Patriot Lookup for my ancestor Martin Graves, to see if he was already a recognized patriot. Within days I had received an email stating that Martin Graves had indeed been recognized by the DAR. A few weeks ago I faxed off the request for a copy of the original application. After weeks of waiting for a copy of the application, checking the… Continue

Who Were My Grandparents?

My parents were both natives of Oakland, Alameda County, California. My Grandparents all met up in Oakland, but came from disparate roots.

My Dad's parents were Jean Lassalle and Anna Madeleine Mazeres.

Jean was born in 1888 in Ogeu les bains, France. He came to America to avoid conscription in France. He arrived at Ellis Island 9 Apr 1907 on the Kaiserin Auguste Victoria. He was going to San Francisco, California to see his cousin, R. Leclerge. I've yet to figure out who… Continue

Casefile Clues how-to Column by Michael John Neill

Just to let Genealogywise users know that my "how-to" column "Casefile Clues" is now housed on my own site www.casefileclues.com. It's a weekly column that typically discusses one record or family and analyzes it for clues, meanings, and suggested further research. "Casefile Clues" is not about new websites, new books, or "getting the latest scoop." It's about research. The website has more information. Thanks. Michael

If someone knows how to perform a global search of what's on… Continue

Find your ancestors in diaries and journals!

Brigham Young University is working on a new website (currently in Beta) called Historic Journals (http://journals.byu.edu) where historic journals are being digitized and posted online. If you are a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and have registered for the New FamilySearch program, you can sign in to the website, and automatically, your pedigree chart from NewFamilySearch is compared to the names that… Continue

Genealogy Software

Okay, so I must admit that I do not use any genealogy software right now. I once had Family Tree Maker around 2004 but when my computer crashed and I lost all of the data (thankfully I had backed up everything with paper due to me being very paranoid) I just couldn't find the time to retype everything. It just sounded like such a pain in the butt.

So, because of this, genealogy software is one of those areas of genealogy I am quite uninformed about. Many of you are experts and some… Continue

How I got into my Genealogy

As A child growing up and being the first grandson I was always told by my grandfather that "I was the most important Sheaffer" as it was up to me to carry the name on, and until I was 16 I was the only grandson. My grandfather always said he had no other Sheaffer cousins or at least those with the name Sheaffer. This stuck with me throughout my childhood often wondering what happened to all these other Sheaffer's. At around 13 I had a school project on family history, this was exciting to me… Continue

The Boyd and Towne Families of Londonderry, New Hampshire

The Boyd Farm in Londonderry, now Rolling Meadows Town Houses

A few years, ago two portraits were donated by a descendant to the Londonderry Leach Library, and their story was printed up in the Derry News. They were primitive style paintings of Robert W. Boyd and his wife, Mary Lund Towne painted by the itinerant portrait painter Horace Bundy in 1851. In the days before photography it was common to hire these roaming self taught artists to… Continue

Settling an Old Argument (Part 4)

The letter in my last post indicated that my grandma had moved back in with her dad at the age of 18 in June of 1927. On October 10 of that year she was married to the son of a Baptist Preacher who lived next door to her foster parents. His name was Richard Lemmy Meherg. I was able to find them in Fayette County, Alabama in the 1930 US Census. Finding anything in the census is a lot of work. There are usually indexes, but they often have spelling mistakes due to the poor quality of the… Continue

Great Website for German/Russian Immigrant Ancestors

I came across another really interesting website today, called Odessa (http://www.odessa3.org). The Odessa website is an absolute goldmine of information about Germans who emigrated to Russia (and to other places after that) in the 1800s, and their descendants. There are digitized books and transcribed and indexed microfilm from the Family History Library for dozens of different areas and topics.

One of the main… Continue

My great grandmother

I have run up against a stone wall in my search for my great grandmother Tipton. The only name I know is "Nettie", she married my great grandfather Edmond Pinkney Harrelson about 1889 in Alabama or Florida. She is on the 1890 Florida census and the 1900, but she died shortly after the census was conducted. My grandmother, Fannie Lou Harrelson Hart, was born in 1892 and was 8 years old when her mother died. Great Grandpa Harrelson soon remarried Luretha Harrelson Robbins Harrelson and they had a… Continue
