30% Discount on New Ancestry.com Memberships

I'd heard about this a while back, but just today verified it for myself - and it's true!  If you go to your local LDS Family History Center, all of which are free to use and open to the public, and ask them to show you how to use their library version of Ancestry.com through their "portal", from the opening screen there will be a "sign up" offer on the right side of the screen. When you enter your email address, it will email you an… Continue

Manuel Fenollosa, Spanish Immigrant to Salem, Massachusetts 1838

My great great grandfather Caleb Rand Bill was a music professor in Salem, Massachusetts before the turn of the 20th century.  Whilst researching his story, I found out about two other early music teachers in Salem, who were both Spanish immigrants.  It is interesting that they became ardent abolitionists around the time of the American Civil War.

Manuel Fenollosa came to Salem from Spain with his brother in law, Manuel Emilio in 1838 on the US navel frigate United States. …

Old Family Photos in Genealogy

I don't have a blog, rather I operate AncientFaces. I began the website back in 2000 and now it has over 50,000 family photos that were submitted by the genealogy community. I urge everyone to check for photos of their ancestors and to share their own. AncientFaces is 100% free and advertisement supported - so there is never a cost involved!

AncientFaces - Family…

Powell Info

Greetings

I am interested in information on Archibald Powell as he relates to the Vannest,Field, Ten Broeck's, Dudley's and Powell's. I have several of Anna Powell Hagaman's letters from the 1920's written to her niece Grace Ann Arnold Powell. She talks alot about family history and has given me many good leads not to mention just good reading material.

I have a gap I can not fill- who is Archibald's father and mother? And does this line trace back to Thomas Powell of Long…

How to set your “Favorites” on the NEHGS search site

There has been an ongoing discussion about the “new” NEHGS website at www.americanancestors.org  and on their Facebook group. Lots of folks are having trouble navigating the new search site, and finding their favorite databases.   Actually, this website is no longer new, since it has been around since late last summer.  The way things move so quickly with technology, I wouldn’t be surprised to see additional changes by now at the NEHGS site…

Death, Deceit and a Couple of Sea Captains

A while back, my niece's husband asked me if I would help him look into his ancestry. (He thought that perhaps his family had “come from whales”.) Seeing as he was and still is serving our country in the Air Force, I was happy to see what I could help him find. In addition to showing him how to do basic census records research, I ran some searches on several of the online digitized book sites. We were both amazed at what I found about one of his ancestors in a book on HeritageQuest --…

Preists and Soldiers who became farmers in Sweden.

In the course of my research I have realized that many of my earliest Swedish ancestors were priests in the Catholic church prior to 1530 and Lutheran's after that. There was even one who had to face the ecclessiastical court and then the King's court to prove he didn't have Catholic leanings although he was ordained in the Lutheran church.

If I ever traced all of their descendants(which might take several lifetimes lol) I would have distant relatives all over the world as if I didn't…

Beyond Wills and Trusts – What Do You Do With Your Intellectual Property?

Most people that have families take on the onerous and reflective task of writing a will which provides instructions for the distribution and disposable of our physical assets after we die. Some are very complicated and involve the establishment of trusts to by-pass generations, leaving collections and assets to future generations. Some are very simple distribution of property to surviving relatives. But most people neglect considering how to pass on their accumulated knowledge and memoirs, who… Continue

A Comment on a Great SEMINAR and Speaker Curt Witcher

Over on another of my blog pages I posted a note  about a seminar some of us at CVGS attended last weekend.

Hemet - San Jacinto Genealogical Society hosted a great day of knowledge and prizes and terrific lunch.

Lunch was provided by the Boy Scouts of America.  I am learning new methods of lunches all the time.

We are hoping for a large seminar like we did last October this October, so my eyes and ears are out there…
