About 20 years ago I met James Collett-White at the Bedfordshire Archives, who I believe helped your father with his book. One thing that would be a tremendous help to Whitbread research would be for you or a male relative to do a Y-DNA test. This would help to genetically define your Whitbread line and help to understand relationships, if any, between your line and the other Bedfordshire Whitbread families.
