I've been helping a friend (also in MI) but we've had luck only as far back as 1900 in censuses (earlier in directories) her ggrandmother was on the Lanier plantation in Huntsville in the Freedmans Bank records, That's all we've been able to find in that time range. It's a difficult trek!
