What do you mean by ethnic? do you means origins? Have you tried Y (male line,surnames)DNA through a surname web-site such as www.one-name.org I expect to find north europeans with my surname.

I am in need of a good site to research the ethnic background of several surnames. Families were in Germany prior to 1800s. Any ideas?
