Sgt William Walker

I am looking for relatives of Sgt William Walker. He was the Sgt of the 3rd Regiment South Carolina Volunteer Company A. Sgt Walker and his men stacked their arms in their Colonels tent in November 1863 and refused to serve for $7 dollars a month when they were promised $13 a month. Sgt Walker was excuted for munity in February 1864, he was 23 years old. Prior to joining the Army Sgt Walker was a pilot for a USS gunboat.

That is phenomenal. I often wonder what would I be able to learn about my 4th Grandfather, James Wingfield, had he lived well beyond emancipation. Unfortunately, he was lynched in 1885 in Wilkes Co. GA.

Those records are a blessing. Glad I could contribute!:-)

Wow! Even though your Grand didn't get to maintain his land, it must be pretty phenomenal to see his and other relatives on the Freedmen's document.

I have always scoured those records in hopes of my any mention of my Ancestors.

Hello Rhonda! That is both amazing sad! The challenges our Ancestors faced, huh? Did your GG Grandfather get to keep his 40 acres?

Let's hope your LCA Root-Digging will be successful. Also connect with Toni Carrier here at GenealogyWise. She heads-up the LCA initiative & may know of additional resources to aid your search.

Hi Rhonda! I went to LowCountry Africana & did a search EDISTO & the database returned several documents. I also did a random search for some of your surnames & they too yielded a result.

Definitely dig-deeper @ LCA... Who knows what you may find?!:-)

Good luck!

Rhonda, I remembered that your Ancestors were from Edisto Island. Have you seen this Freedmen's Bureau record before? http://freedmensbureau.com/georgia/landtitles/landregister2a.htm

Hey Rhonda! I see your Ancestors were from LowCountry/SC.

Make sure you join LowCountry Africana here at GenWise - http://www.genealogywise.com/group/lowcountryafricana

They are a wonderful LowCountry Genealogy & Culture initiative with one heck of a slave document repository!

Their website is www.LowCountryAfricana.net. Certainly worth the visit!:-)
