Handstamp on an SS5 form

Posted on September 4, 2009 at 2:07pm 0 Comments

It took a little while, but I think I have finally figured out what the hand stamed entry on a 1963 SS5 form stands for. While it is not a major clue, at least I know what it means.

There is a link to the image of the SS5 form here:

After getting a few suggestions of what it could stand for, I googled it with the words "social secutiry" and came up with some interesting webpages.

Many genealogists research for years and the information just stacks. Or it gets entered in the computer. But what happens when the genealogist dies? Your will may indicate where your papers are to go, but once you are dead, you are dead. Those papers and files may still go to the dump.

Consider publishing small pieces of your research in local publications, such as those of the local historical or genealogical society. Compiling a biography of great-great-grandfather may be a small… Continue

Casefile Clues how-to Column by Michael John Neill

Posted on August 6, 2009 at 5:42pm 2 Comments

Just to let Genealogywise users know that my "how-to" column "Casefile Clues" is now housed on my own site www.casefileclues.com. It's a weekly column that typically discusses one record or family and analyzes it for clues, meanings, and suggested further research. "Casefile Clues" is not about new websites, new books, or "getting the latest scoop." It's about research. The website has more information. Thanks. Michael

For over ten years, I have written regular columns about my research experience, first for Ancestry and most recently for Dick Eastman. Starting this week, my weekly "how-to" column "Casefile Clues" will be available exclusively through subscription through my website http://www.casefileclues.com/. I am very excited about the move. Our first issue will be sent out the first weekend of August.

I have written over 400 columns about my research experiences both in the United States and… Continue

Looking for a copy of a page of a book in Harvard Libary

Posted on July 15, 2009 at 11:47am 0 Comments

I'm trying to get a copy of one page from a book in Harvard's library that according to Google books contains the name of my ancestor. It is a German directory from the early nineteenth century. More information about it is here:

http://www.rootdig.com/2009/07/google-books-finds-my-ancestor-in.html

Thanks.
